50 Things that make me happy Tag

My mental health has been up and down to say the least recently and every where I look this week all I seem to find is anger and hate. Whether it’s differences turning into hate fuelled by the political climate, anger and despair at games and game developers, or people complaining about the royal wedding and taking it out on two innocent children – it’s been a constant. So when Michelle of Lazy Day Project asked if anyone wanted to be tagged into a 50 things that make me happy tag I popped my name in the hat. As you know I love blog tags and it’s been a while since I last did one. So I’m using this to banish the negativity of the week and also going to use this as a type of CBT exercise to help me with my mental health.

I’m Tagging

No tag would be complete without some people being tagged! I’m tagging Mariah, Matt, Emma,Niki, Rae, Annie and Katie! And of course anyone else reading this and wants to take part in a tag. Remember you don’t need to be tagged to take part in a tag πŸ˜‰ If you feel the inspiration then run with it!

Over to You

I hope you enjoyed reading through my list of 50 things that make me happy. I have to say it’s harder than it looks! I started off with some of the obvious, and then had patches of total mind blanks before my mind just went off and running at times. It did make me feel better and more grounded in the present though. So mission accomplished there πŸ™‚

What makes you happy?

Could you tackle a list of 50 things or do you think you’d find it easier with a smaller one?

Did anything on my list catch your eye?

Let me know in the comments because we always need to celebrate the things that make us happy and unite us πŸ™‚

Sunshine Blogger Award

Sunshine Blog Award

When I saw blogger awards and nominations going around I honestly didn’t expect to get nominated for an award, and that was ok; my blog has been slow and I’ve been building things back up due to my health. So not only was I shocked to get nominated once, but then a second time! Thank you so much Megan and Pepi! It really helped perk me up to know people were thinking of me and that they recognised me and my blog for inspiring positivity. While my life isn’t always a bundle of joy, I do try to use this blog to help people by talking about my life and issues I come across.

Since I’ve been nominated twice I’m going to answer both sets of questions!

About the Award

The Sunshine Blogger award is a peer recognition for bloggers that inspire positivity, joy, warmth and any other emotions that you feel when you think about the sun.

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked you.
  • Nominate 10 new blogs to receive the award and write them 10 new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Questions from Megan

  • What game are you currently playing?

I’m playing a few different ones actually. I always have at least one MMO on the go and right now that’s World of Warcraft. Alongside that I’m playing Divinity 2: Original Sin with my fiance Chris, and then on my own I’m jumping around a few other games as part of a mini-blog project.

  • What game you’re most looking forward to?

Naturally, the next WoW expansion Battle for Azeroth comes to mind first. I don’t tend to keep up with many new games due to funds, time and a massive to play list, however, I’ve been looking forward to Final Fantasy XV on the PC. It’s a game series I’ve never played, but been aware of for years and after seeing the movie Kingsglaive I’ve been dying to know what happens next!

  • What is you favorite game of last year?

Divinity 2: Original Sin – while the combat is so slow (it’s turn based) and drives me a bit nuts, the rest of the game is amazing. It is so funny, yet there’s also the drama, suspense and danger too. We’re only on Act 2 and I’m loving it. I mean, a game that gives you the ability to fricking talk to animals and get quests from them?! Hell yes!

  • What would you change about your favorite franchise?

Off the top of my head I can’t think of what I would change in World of Warcraft, but I do know that there’s been a blog post rummaging around in my head for a while which is me basically putting together my ideal MMORPG using parts from all the ones I play. The fact that I always go back to WoW means that it’s more a case of tweaking than actually changing things, because otherwise I wouldn’t be back to it every time. The only major issue I have is the players themselves; toxic men being anti-female gamers, people camping quests instead of helping, or signing up as the wrong spec just to jump a queue.

  • What game has influenced you creatively? Writing, drawing, etc.

World of Warcraft without a doubt. The lore is just amazing, and I love that they keep adapting things every expansion. I know a lot of people are QQing about changes, but they forget that lore is in the hands of the creators and it needs to change every now and then so the game can grow and not become stagnant. I think the latest complaint was Kul Tiran, i.e. human, druids. I’ve also met the CEO, Mike Morhaim, and he is as down to earth and as geeky as he seems; this is a company he and his friends built up from scratch from their love of gaming and their enthusiasm is still there. That in itself is a massive influence to me as a writer and content creator.

  • What games do you have multiple copies of?

Star Wars games such as Knights of the Old Republic I and II because I lost one of the discs and for many years couldn’t play it, and then Steam did a massive Star Wars Bundle in a sale and I got them all again. We also have multiple copies of the older WoW expansions before downloads became available since we have 2 accounts and at one time a third account between us.

  • How do you usually spend a lazy evening?

I am someone who is always on the go, I cannot sit still unless I’m doing something to engage my mind. So a lazy evening to me is curled up watching a movie with my fiance Chris, or reading comics or a book.

  • How many countries have you been to?

Ooh… I actually had to go count this πŸ˜€ Thankfully I started tracking this on a pinterest board a while back so it was a bit easier!

15 = England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Tunisia, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Monaco, Vatican City (it’s actually it’s own country).

  • What was your favorite TV show when you were a child?

She-Ra! I still love that show and have read the recent comics. Generally most 80s cartoons are among my favourites.

  • What was the very first game you ever beat?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Questions from Pepi

  • Which of these houses do you belong to and why? Slotherin, Ravenpaw, Hufflepug, or Gryffinboar.

Ravenpaw! I love books, and it generally just fits my entire personality. I was originally a Slotherin but a few years later I resigned up to Pottermore and got sorted into Ravenpaw.

  • What do you think you would find on the Snapechat?

Stuff I’m not interested in? I don’t usually feel old but Snapchat makes me feel like I’ve missed a generation. I just don’t get it at all.

  • What pop singer do you prefer Cat Cobain, David Meowie, or Purrince? Why?

I’m actually not really a fan of any of them. I know, it’s terrible. There’s probably a few of their songs that I know and that’s about it.

  • What character plays Harrison Bored in Star Mars?

I have no idea how I’m supposed to answer this.. Han Solo?

  • Who is your favorite Star Meow character? Catmander William Riker, Doganna Troi, Catmander Data, Catain Jean-Luc Picard, Geordi La Paw, or Lieutenant Woof? Why?

Sorry, I’m not a trekkie! I really enjoyed the new movies, and that’s as far as my knowledge goes. I’m a Star Wars girl <3

  • What coffee best describes your personality?

Mocha, which happens to be my favourite as well – because I’m not just one thing, I’m a mixture and so you get both the sweet chocolate and the bitter coffee side of things with me.

  • What would you do if you faced a giant fly right now?

I would scream my head off. One time when we were having wasp issues, I had the exact dream except with a giant wasp. I woke my ex up because I was screaming my head off πŸ˜€

  • And if the giant fly was Jeff Goldblum?

I’m going to get some flack for this one, but sorry, I totally don’t get the Jeff Goldblum appeal!

  • Cthulhu is in love with you. Would you reject his tentacles? (I know, this one is naughty)

That’s between me and Cthulhu πŸ˜‰

  • Loki tricks you. How?

It would probably be something geeky, like a new book in a series that has ended, something awesome in a video game or being able to star in a Star Wars film. Something that would get me excited and then break my heart when it wasn’t true.

Geeky Girl Tag

The Geeky Girl Tag
I love surveys, memes, challenges – anything that asks me to answer things that I haven’t thought up myself. I’ll often repost those ‘ask me…’ graphics on twitter and instagram to see what people come up with. So when I saw this geeky girl tag answered by Kitten at The Howling Wolfheart I had to jump in!
The tag is originally by Cassie at ZombieGoddess Beauty and she has also done a Gamer Tag too!

1. What is your must-have tech gadget?

Once upon a time I would have said it was my PC, however, after a year of having my tablet it wins this award. Only thing I don’t use it for is blogging, I much prefer an actual keyboard for typing.

2. Which house do you belong to in Hogwarts?

I am in Ravenclaw! You can read more about my life in the HP universe in this post from 5 Fandom Friday’s Potter month last year πŸ™‚

3. Who is your favourite Doctor?

Healing; as a spoonie the idea of being able to ease someone’s pain sounds like the best superpower of all to me.

7. What is your favourite fantasy world?

8. If you could be any fictional race, what would you be?

Twi’lek! I love Twi’leks so much, they’re beautiful, graceful and I could be purple!

My Thoughts on The Last Jedi Trailer

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer Thoughts

This post is going to be laden with spoilers from The Last Jedi Trailer which just aired at the Star Wars Celebration Weekend. So before you read on I would suggest viewing it if you haven’t yet πŸ˜‰

One Truth

The trailer shows us a lot of action, but what really caught my attention was Luke’s final words: “I only know one truth, and that is that the Jedi must end.”

Holy crap, right?!

I’m going to start by addressing the first part of the line; “I only know one truth”. To me this says that Luke has seen something in the force, he has had specific visions or the force has told him something. From the events of the Prequels we know that it is possible for the force to be manipulated, for a Jedi Master to see things that they believe are real and are not at all what they seem. This one truth that Luke believes he knows might actually be a load of utter rubbish. There’s also a possibility that everything that has happened, including losing his students to his nephew’s fall to the dark side, could have sent Luke over the edge. He’s been alone in isolation, for how many years? Maybe Artoo has kept him sane, maybe not. We really don’t know at this point.

End or Beginning?

Now onto point two; “… the Jedi must end”. This sounds extremely worrying and scary considering the whole Star Wars universe hinges on the ongoing battle between the Jedi and the Sith, Light vs. Dark. But as Luke informs Rey in the trailer; it’s so much bigger than that. Long time Star Wars fans of the expanded universe and the video games will be familar with the concept of other force users, as well as the term ‘Grey Jedi’. It’s quite possible that Luke isn’t talking about the complete end of a force for good, of force users, maybe he’s just realised that the concept of Jedi and Sith have become outdated. In the Expanded Universe Luke’s Jedi Academy followed most of the fundamentals of his predecessors, but have some big differences as well. Emotional ties, for example, were not consider a weakness or distraction. So it is quite possible that Luke is about to pioneer something entirely new, as guided by the Force and Rey, as a new character without any formal training or experience in any discipline is the perfect blank slate for such an idea.

Of course, the writers could have gone entirely off the wall and Luke really isn’t Luke and is some crazy clone… wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened πŸ˜‰

4 Fandom Spin Off Book Series You Need to Read

Geek Blogs Unite - Between The Pages Theme

There’s no formal FF5 prompts this month so I’ll be filling in with a few old ones and some other topics. This week it’s time for another theme over at Geek Blogs Unite and this time it’s Between the Pages. After hearing about the new series of spin off novels for Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Kiersten White it got me thinking about spin off series for TV Shows, Video Games and Movies. If you’ve not heard about the new series, the protagonist is one of the Potential Slayers who was chosen in the final episode of the show. I’ve only read one of White’s books and thoroughly enjoyed it so I’m really curious to read this new series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I mostly read Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin off novels when I was in my teens, and while I don’t remember a lot of them, the one series that stuck in my head and remains a firm favourite is The Gatekeeper Trilogy by Christopher Golden. It was one of the first series in spin off novels, and the books were also a lot longer. That plus a fantastic and imaginative storyline makes them a great read!

World of Warcraft

Where do I even begin… I guess I should let you know that I’ve not yet read a spin off novel that I didn’t enjoy. Most of the novels fill in gaps in the lore (usually events leading up to the next game expansion), or tell the story of past events that aren’t in game. I started with the Warcraft Archive which is an anthology of short stories, and then moved onto the War of the Ancients Trilogy which remains one of my favourite series to date. If you’re a lore junkie I really recommend the new Warcraft Chronicle series. The second book was just released in Match 2017, and they both go into an incredible amount of detail. The first one focuses on the creation of the universe and Azeroth, and the War of the Ancients and the second one begins with the creation of Dreanor, the arrival of the Draenei and the rise of the Horde. It stops at the end of the Second War, suggesting that the next one will pick up with the events of Thrall’s early life and the Lich King.

Doctor Who & Torchwood

I absolutely love the Doctor Who spin off novels as they really do capture the mood and characters of the show. I can clearly hear the actors voices in my head as I read their dialogue and the stories are imaginative, light hearted and fun. I like a lot of books that can be quite dark and series, and sometimes it is just nice to read something lighter. As the darker show, Torchwood novels are a little different and while I’ve only managed to read one so far, it was also a fab read.

Star Wars

Due to the canon restart there are in fact two lines of spin off novels for the Star Wars universe. The original Expanded Universe (EU) has been rebranded as ‘Legends‘ and even as a huge fan of it, I have to admit that some of the stories weren’t a high calibre. I hold a lot of the stories and character dear to my heart and always will, however, when you have such a large universe and so many different authors involved there’s going to be some bad apples. As a writer I understand why they rebooted the canon along with the new movies, and I was excited and terrified at the idea of new content. Like the original EU the new canon has its highs and lows. I’ve only read two new novels, and the first series is written by an author who’s writing is terrible. Maybe the second book is better, maybe not. I will eventually read it, but right now the comics have my full attention. Where the novels are lacking the comics have found in spades and I really recommend checking them out.

Have you checked out any of these spin off book series? Are there any you recommend or avoid?
