Skincare Samples

Sample Shoutout - June: Skincare Edition

Welcome to the first Sample Shoutout a new series here at Just Geeking By where I share a couple of samples I’ve been trying out each month. They will usually be beauty samples, however, from time to time they may be something else such as food or stationery! It really depends on what I can get my mitts on 🙂 These are all free samples gathered with the help of freebie sites or following companies on social media networks. If you’d like me to go into more detail about how I obtain samples let me know in the comments! ((Texture used in the banner is by Lady Asmodina and the Sakura Frame is by katydeviantart.))

This month it’s a skincare special as I review L’oreal Paris Smooth Sugar Scrubs, Clarins SOS Hydra and Glam Glow’s SuperMud Clearing Treatment!

L’oreal Paris: Smooth Sugar Scrubs

Cocoa Nourish

L'oreal Paris: Smooth Sugar Scrubs Cocoa Nourish

As soon as I saw these advertised I knew I had to get my hands on them so when I saw the chance to grab a sample I did and crossed my fingers! I was really excited when I got it through the post, and then held onto it for a few weeks because I didn’t want to use it up.

I tested the cocoa Nourish scrub, and there’s also kiwi Clear and grapeseed Glow.

L'oreal Paris: Smooth Sugar Scrubs Cocoa Nourish

Eventually I did and I absolutely loved it! It did everything I expected and more. I’ve had these pesky blackheads around my lips that I’ve tried literally everything to get rid of them and nothing has worked – until now! The smooth sugar scrub got rid of them in one use. Wham bam, thank you L’Oreal Paris! It’s been probably about a month since I used it and they’re still so much better than they were. It really did nip the most stubborn ones in the bud.

As you can (sort of) see from this photo it’s a very clear mixture when it goes on. You put it on, add water to activate and leave it on for however long you’re instructed. You can also put it directly onto your lips so it’s a face and lip scrub.

My Vote: 10/10

Clarins SOS Hydra Face Mask

Clarins: SOS Hydra Face Mask

Face masks are no longer just the sort that you put on and wash off, and there are now a bunch of moisturiser based ones which you just wipe off when you’re done. The Clarins SOS Hydra Face Mask is one of these and is designed to be what it’s name states; a dose of hydration to save your skin. Well, it does that. My skin was certainly more moisturised afterwards… the problem was getting the blasted thing OFF.

The instructions say something like ‘just wipe it off’. Hah! I wiped, I rubbed, I washed and I even grabbed my micellar water and used that, and even an hour after I still could feel the remnants of it clinging to my skin. I was not impressed.

My Vote: 4/10

GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment

 GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment

I am a big Glamglow fan girl after receiving their THIRSTYMUD™ Hydrating Treatment Glam To Go in a prize pack, so I was eager to try more of their range. So when the chance came to try two of their new products I applied and got sent this clearing treatment along with another one (check out next month’s Sample Shoutout!). I kind of had mixed feelings about this one and I think it was mostly because it was only a one use application. I think this is the sort of product you would need to try over a period of time to really see the benefit.

 GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment

As you can see from the picture it has a bubbly type of texture which then dries more like a mud/clay mask. It felt a bit odd while drying, otherwise I had no other comments on it. My skin came out feeling fresh and clean – but that is pretty much what I expect from any face mask. It that doesn’t happen then to me a face mask isn’t doing it’s job. So like I said I’d definetly want to try this for a longer period of time to see how it went before being able to give a proper opinion on it.

Vote: 6/10 * ((An approximate vote due to the circumstances noted in the review.))

4 Beauty Products I loved in 2016 [Sharing Saturday]

Sharing Saturday: 2016 beauty products

I’m still playing catch up and working on end of the year/beginning of new year things, so this week I’m taking a look back at the beauty products I tried last year. Here are my top 4 recommendations!

Hide it! Concealer Palette

by Technic

Thanks to my dermatillomania spot out breaks for me are an even bigger nightmare. It has taken me years to finally find products that work for my skin and work to help hide the signs and scars. This product is not a BIG part of that routine (as you can see from the very used palette!). I find that I have two problems using just normal concealer; it doesn’t hide anything and makes it look even more big and obvious. By using the colour correcting concealers together I can merge and blend the perfect cover. And at £1.54 on Amazon, it’s an amazing price too! They also do a bigger 8 shade version as well which I might try in the future.

Lots of Bubbles Tantalising Gift Set

by I Love…Cosmetics

I tend to use a shower more than a bath and I prefer to have a variety of shower gels to use, not the same one every time. So I’m always on the look out for sets of small bottles of shower gels. This gift set by I Love… Cosmetics comes with 6 different flavours; coconut & cream, strawberries & cream, vanilla & ice cream (all pictured above), mango & papaya, lemons & limes, and raspberry & blackberry. I loved them! As you can see, there are only 3 left so they last quite a while and I also had the coconut & cream exfoliating shower smoothie (hence why the shower gel version is untouched so far) and that is also fantastic. These also double as bubble bath, so if you’re like me and use both or prefer one over the other you can still enjoy the gorgeous scents.

Their gift sets tend to come out more during the holiday season, but you can grab this one on Amazon for £9.99 and some of their others as well. Sadly it seems that some are only in holiday sets or have been retired, as their website only has certain flavours listed, as does Superdrug.

Hydro Boost

by Neutrogena

I was fortunate enough to get this to test from Bzz Agent and I was really happy with the product. As I’ve mentioned in previous product reviews, my skin does much better with light weight creams that hydrate. So this is perfect and it does exactly what it says it did. It hydrated and helped clean up my skin. There is one down side though; at £12.99 for 50ml it just isn’t worth it for the price. It’s good, and it does last a while, yet that is just a bit too pricey for my current budget. Especially if you use it every day, morning and night.

Flipbalm: Creamy Coconut

by Palmer’s

I am completely in love with this and have been addictively using it since I got it. It has done my lips a world of good and has a lovely sweet, but not sickening taste. The flip lid is easy to use, although it doesn’t travel very well and can open up in your bag if you’re not careful (yep, it happened). There’s plenty in it, so it’s a lip balm that will last a while no matter how often you use it! You can grab it for £4.99 from Amazon and other stockists. There are two other flavours; Juicy Watermelon and Ripe Mango.

Have you tried any of these? What did you think? What beauty products did you fall in love with in 2016?

Garnier Ultimate Blends Body Lotion & Balm Review

Garnier ultimate blends review

I received these two Garnier Ultimate Blends products as part of a campaign on Bzz Agent and have been using them constantly over the last few months – and not solely because I wanted to give them an honest review. I fell in love with this product because it managed to do something that many products have failed. So read on about my experiences and feel free to ask any questions in the comments 🙂

The Products

I was given two products from the Delicate Oat line of Garnier Ultimate Blends which is designed for dry and sensitive skin. One was a Soothing Hydrating Lotion for the whole family and the other was Face & Body Multi-Purpose Soothing Balm for fragile and sensitive areas. The body lotion comes with a pump action that at first I found to be a bit of a pest; if you pushed the pump down fully it gave a massive amount of lotion, which was great for covering a massive area but if you just wanted some for your hands it was way too much. However, I got into the habit of just pumping it half way down and voilà perfect amount for hands. Unfortunately our family consists of just me and my fiancé, so I was unable to test it on various different generations. My skin is quite dry and it can be sensitive, and I had no bad reactions to the product at all.

The soothing balm comes in a smaller round tub and honestly, I expected it to run out pretty quick. I still have loads of it left. You really don’t need to use a lot even if you’re covering a big area.

Smell & Texture

I love the small of oats, and almonds, which is why I chose this one over the other products and it didn’t disappoint. However, if you hate that sort of smell this isn’t for you. It has a smell that lingers, which isn’t overpowering in my opinion and I personally liked it. Texture wise I felt that both products were of equal consistency for what they aim to do. The Body lotion is a lot lighter and spreads really easily, while the soothing balm is a much thicker consistency as you’d expect from a product aimed at targeting specific areas/problems. Both are very soft and smooth and it absorbs nicely.

Results

Now the important question; did it actually make a difference? Yes! I have some patches of persistent very dry skin that just would not get better. I’d tried my normal staple products from Body Shop’s Cocoa Butter line and Vaseline Intensive Care range and nada. Didn’t even scratch the surface. Then I started trying this and oh wow, after one day the difference was amazing. The rough patch of skin was gone, it was now silky smooth and I couldn’t tell there had been any dryness there at all. Even better; it lasted. I’ve been using it every week now after my showers and it’s really made a difference.

Overall, my skin has been more rejuvenated and much softer. The only time these products let me down was using the Soothing Balm on my face. It is very thick, and I just felt that it didn’t make any difference to my face at all. I will say that this is more a particular of my own facial skin rather than a negative mark against the product as my face seems to react better to light weight moisturiser and the Soothing Balm is the total opposite of light weight. So for some people it might work brilliantly, for me it didn’t work on my face at all.

Would I use it again?

Most definitely yes and I am going to mourn my two wonderful review products when they run out. This is just one of the whole range, so if this doesn’t sound your cup of tea I’d suggest trying some of the others. There’s Honey Treasures which is for ‘very dry skin’ which I’m curious to see in comparison to the one I reviewed. I mean, if this made my dry skin turn into super duper lovely skin, what magical powers does the one for dry skin have? Likewise there’s Mythic Olive which is for dry skin and includes a moisturising oil. I’m not sure how much I’d like that as to me oil equates to slimy. Then for normal skin there is the Marvellous Oil range which uses camellia and argan oil.
