4 Fandom Spin Off Book Series You Need to Read

Geek Blogs Unite - Between The Pages Theme

There’s no formal FF5 prompts this month so I’ll be filling in with a few old ones and some other topics. This week it’s time for another theme over at Geek Blogs Unite and this time it’s Between the Pages. After hearing about the new series of spin off novels for Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Kiersten White it got me thinking about spin off series for TV Shows, Video Games and Movies. If you’ve not heard about the new series, the protagonist is one of the Potential Slayers who was chosen in the final episode of the show. I’ve only read one of White’s books and thoroughly enjoyed it so I’m really curious to read this new series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I mostly read Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin off novels when I was in my teens, and while I don’t remember a lot of them, the one series that stuck in my head and remains a firm favourite is The Gatekeeper Trilogy by Christopher Golden. It was one of the first series in spin off novels, and the books were also a lot longer. That plus a fantastic and imaginative storyline makes them a great read!

World of Warcraft

Where do I even begin… I guess I should let you know that I’ve not yet read a spin off novel that I didn’t enjoy. Most of the novels fill in gaps in the lore (usually events leading up to the next game expansion), or tell the story of past events that aren’t in game. I started with the Warcraft Archive which is an anthology of short stories, and then moved onto the War of the Ancients Trilogy which remains one of my favourite series to date. If you’re a lore junkie I really recommend the new Warcraft Chronicle series. The second book was just released in Match 2017, and they both go into an incredible amount of detail. The first one focuses on the creation of the universe and Azeroth, and the War of the Ancients and the second one begins with the creation of Dreanor, the arrival of the Draenei and the rise of the Horde. It stops at the end of the Second War, suggesting that the next one will pick up with the events of Thrall’s early life and the Lich King.

Doctor Who & Torchwood

I absolutely love the Doctor Who spin off novels as they really do capture the mood and characters of the show. I can clearly hear the actors voices in my head as I read their dialogue and the stories are imaginative, light hearted and fun. I like a lot of books that can be quite dark and series, and sometimes it is just nice to read something lighter. As the darker show, Torchwood novels are a little different and while I’ve only managed to read one so far, it was also a fab read.

Star Wars

Due to the canon restart there are in fact two lines of spin off novels for the Star Wars universe. The original Expanded Universe (EU) has been rebranded as ‘Legends‘ and even as a huge fan of it, I have to admit that some of the stories weren’t a high calibre. I hold a lot of the stories and character dear to my heart and always will, however, when you have such a large universe and so many different authors involved there’s going to be some bad apples. As a writer I understand why they rebooted the canon along with the new movies, and I was excited and terrified at the idea of new content. Like the original EU the new canon has its highs and lows. I’ve only read two new novels, and the first series is written by an author who’s writing is terrible. Maybe the second book is better, maybe not. I will eventually read it, but right now the comics have my full attention. Where the novels are lacking the comics have found in spades and I really recommend checking them out.

Have you checked out any of these spin off book series? Are there any you recommend or avoid?

5 Fictional Creatures I’d Like To Adopt [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Creatures I want to adopt - 5 Fandom Friday

As there aren’t any new 5 Fandom Friday prompts up for April just yet I decided to revisit a topic I’ve been wanting to cover for sooo long! I am notorious for watching movies and tv shows, and asking my fiancé ‘Can I have one?!’ whenever a cute or majestic  creature comes along. I do it with books too, of course, but unless Chris has read them I can’t really squee too much out loud. There are so many more that could be added to this list, however, my brain went blank. Doh! So here are the ones that left such a mark on me that even brain fog couldn’t erase them from my memory!

Guild Wars 2 - Aurene

Aurene

Guild Wars 2

I’m going to be kinda vague on this one because I don’t want to spoil this for anyone else who plays/wants to play Guild Wars 2. Aurene is adorable, playful and so much fun and I don’t know how anyone wouldn’t want adopt this gorgeous baby dragon!

Percy Jackson - Blackjack

Blackjack

Percy Jackson series

It’s not a surprise that Pegasi feature in Rick Riordan’s greek mythology series, however, Blackjack is not what you’d expect for a Pegasus. He’s got an attitude and personality that is totally his own, and regularly uses slang rather than formal titles. He’s a fantastic friend to the gang, and who wouldn’t want a winged horse to ride?!

Disney, Pocahontas - Meeko

Meeko

Pocahontas

There are so many companions in Disney that I love, but it was Meeko that stole my heart. I had a Meeko plushie and he was my pride and joy for ages. If I had to pick just one Disney companion/side kick to adopt then Meeko would be it!

Star Wars - Varactyl

Varactyl

Star Wars

I remember the first moment I saw Obi-Wan’s Varactyl in Attack of the Clones. Then he started leaping off of cliffs with it! Every leap and bound made my heart soar. The Varactyl is such a majestic creature, and I was so happy when it got included in the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. While I can’t adopt it for real I can at least adopt it virtually!

World of Warcraft - Hippogryphs

Hippogryphs

World of Warcraft

I’d always admired the beautiful creatures, however, it wasn’t until Wrath of the Lich King that I fell totally in love with them. It started with the cute baby hippogryphs and grew even more when I spotted this mount, the Silver Covenant hippogryph. Since then I’ve collected every mount, every pet I can get my hands on.

How about you? Would you quite happily have a zoo of creatures from fandoms like me? Or are there just a few that fell in love with?  Let me know! <3  ((Video Game screenshots from my own collection, Varactyl image from Star Wars Wiki, Meeko from Disney Screencaps, Percy Jackson cover from Amazon.))

5 Favorite Sequels [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Favourite Sequels

In preparation for this post I was running through movie sequels in my head, and then it occurred to me to wonder whether sequel refers to movies only. It doesn’t…..

A sequel is a narrative, documental, or other work of literature, film, theatre, television, music, or video game that continues the story of, or expands upon, some earlier work. ((Wikipedia))

Oh balls. I considered just sticking to movies, but then the video games and the books kept poking me. They wanted to be heard too. Crud. I chose to exclude TV because to me, TV is an ongoing sequel. Until the final season every episode, every season, is a sequel. That narrowed it down a little. After much deliberation, here are my favourite sequels! [Please note this post contains affiliate links.]

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition

I absolutely loved the original Dragon Age and subsequent games in the series, however, it was the most recent that caught my attention. The storylines were great, the music beautiful and the art was just phenomenal. There was so much to do and see, and there’s DLCs as well to continue on the fun. I can totally see myself replaying this in the future to choose different paths. ((Image Credits – Dragon Age Wiki))

Lethal Weapon 4

Lethal Weapon 4

I’ve always enjoyed these movies and the final one was no exception. I absolutely love the dynamic between Lorna (Rene Russo) and Riggs, and so the film that introduced her (#3) is pretty high on my list too. However, there’s multiple different parts of this film that just hits the mark and makes it so awesome. You’ve got Jet Li as the bad guy, Uncle Benny, Chris Rock as a new young cop, the secret of Murtagh’s fortune is finally revealed and there’s two very interesting pregnancies. The boys are older, a bit slower and get in deep trouble (as usual) and it’s just such a great film with so many classic moments. ((Image Credits – IMP Awards Poster Gallery))

The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce

The Woman Who Rides Like a Man

I’ve lost count of the many times I’ve mentioned my love for Tamora Pierce’s books, so here’s a little insight into what makes them so special. This is book 4 of her first series set in the lands of Tortall. By this point Alanna has become a knight and has left court after a showdown with the big bad. She sets out of her own, leaving her lover behind and this book is about her finding who she is. She’s not sure if she’s meant to be someone’s wife, she’s largely ignored her magic, and she’s pretty sure that the darkest part of her life is over. Nope, not even quite and she finds that she’s still very much in the hands of the Goddess. ((Image Credits – Tamora Pierce Wiki))

Wrath of the Lich King

Wrath of the Lich King

There have now been six World of Warcraft expansions, and it is the second expansion Wrath of the Lich King which wins my favourite sequel. When trying to work out why this one always wins, I had one immediate answer: DRAGONS! I absolutely love the Dragons, the characters and the lore regarding the Dragonflights and this was the big ‘here be dragons!’ expansion. There was a lot of other lore and history flying about, and this expansion had some of my favourite raids too. Overall it was an enjoyable experience and one that holds fond memories. Legion may take over Wrath’s spot, however, I feel that it’s still too ‘new’ to be chosen just yet. ((Image Credits – WoW Wiki))

Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi

Did you think there wouldn’t be anything Star Wars on this list? Really? 😉 This is my favourite Star Wars film of all, and one of my favourite films ever. I have probably watched this film more than anything else in my life. I could quite happily sit and watch it all day, and have done so before 😛 There’s just so many different elements that make this the one for me. I love the start of the film and the whole rescue in Jabba’s Palace. I get shivers just thinking about the way Artoo shoots Luke his lightsaber, and Luke catches it, jumping into action. Luke is finally a Jedi Knight and the change between the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi is immediately noticeable. This isn’t some farm boy any more, this is a guy who knows who he is, what he is and what he needs to do. There’s so much more, I could go on and on. I’ll just say one last thing; Ewoks. Enough said.

How about you; are any of these your favourite sequels? What are your favourites?

My Goals for March

Monthly Goals: March 2017

It’s been a few months since I did one of these. January was just a crazy mess and February was all about the chest infection. Time to get back on track!

Blogging

  • I have blog ideas coming out of my ears right now. Seriously, so many ideas so hopefully this month will see an increase in content!
  • Commenting; yep, still an ongoing issue for me and I’m slowly getting there. People have actually had comments left by me recently *gasp*
  • Work on Blog Promo Links List.
  • Work on SEO.
  • Pinterest images for entries.
  • Media Kit? Might be able to squeeze this in this month.

Bullet Journal

I started a bullet journal this year to coincide with my 2017 Word of the Year Treasure (read more here).  February was supposed to be my first month of trackers and as you can imagine, the chest infection threw that out the window. That means March is the first time tracking things, so I need to keep up to date with it and stick to it.

Challenges

I’ve just launched The Screenshot Challenge and I’m also taking part in Magical March hosted by Kayla. I’ll be posting a selfie every day and screenshots every Sunday on my instagram.

Gaming

Since December I’ve not been playing WoW. With everything that happened in December I just haven’t felt like being social and WoW is my social game. So I went back to Guild Wars 2 and Chris joined me, so we’ve been playing through that together; first time for him. I’m playing it pretty leisurely so I don’t have any specific goals, I’m enjoying just floating by!

I do want to try and start the Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC’s this month though. I was focused on GW2 and have been busy, so hoping to fit it in somewhere.

Reading

I have been in a slump since the start of the year. I’ve gotten through some comics, and that is about it. I still haven’t finished a book I started in November, not because there is anything wrong with the book, I just have no motivation to read. It could be because I’ve been so stressed and ill, or I’ve just not had enough energy to spare. I hope to change it this month and get back on track!

Convention Preparation

Last year I won 6 tickets to the Sci Fi and Fantasy Warriors weekender, a weekend of geekyness and meeting guests! There’s some great guests there including Nicholas Brendon from Buffy, Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf and Gareth David Lloyd from Torchwood. There’s also a masquerade ball, something I have been wanting to go to for so long! It’s at the end of the month so I need to get a bunch of stuff prepared:

  • Discuss and plan schedule for the weekend.
  • Test hair and make up.
  • Look up DIY masques and make ours.
  • Create blog business cards and get them shipped.
  • Prepare/collect items for signings.
  • Packing list.
  • Food/Meal planning.

Dissertation

My dissertation had to go on the back burner a bit due to my recent illness, so this month I really need to crack on with it. I’ve had to re-evaluate the way I’m approaching my research question so it is something more plausible. I’m currently looking at a possible diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and one important aspect of living with the condition is learning to pace myself. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have made some good head way with this!

Have you got any goals for March? Let me know!

5 Galentine’s Day Gifts Ideas [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Galentines Day Gifts

When I first saw this prompt I was like, huh?! I was not at all familar with the concept so had to look it up.

“Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

– Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knopein Parks and Recreation

This is something that I can embrace and totally get on board with. Growing up I found it very difficult to have female friends because I was more of a tom boy and into geeky stuff instead of swooning over the latest celebrity or caring what was in fashion. As I’ve grown older I’ve gotten more female friends, some of who are in relationships and others who are single. I know every year that Valentines day can be a bullet through the heart for those who have yet to find their one, so the idea of saying ‘screw partners’ and spending time with independent amazing women sounds bloody awesome to me!

My female friends cover a wide range of personality types and interests, but this is a fandom prompt so I went geeky and stuck to fandom related things. Maybe next year I’ll do a more inclusive blog post for gift ideas for Galentines day. For now though, enjoy!

Books!

Well, duh, of course this is top of my list! I think there is nothing more amazing or special than gifting someone with a bunch of books. If they have the same interests as you then it’s lovely and personal to give them a selection of your favourites. If they’re into different genres then check out their TBR or wish list (most book worms have one!) and spoil them with a selection. There’s even the possibility of getting the same book for everyone and getting together again when you’re all finished; like a personal mini book group! The ideas and possibilities are endless. If you’re short on cash there’s sites like bookmooch and read it swap it, as well as charity shops so you can do good and spoil your gal pals 🙂 And if they’re an e-book lover don’t forget to check out my list of ways to get free e-books!

Stationery

Everyone uses stationery, geeks especially and thanks to sites like etsy there is an abundance of geeky stationery available online – like this fantastic stamp from biterswit! Whether your friend is just a post it note and pen kind of girl, or whether they’re a total bullet journal fan, there is something for everyone.

Plushies

I’ve yet to meet a geek, male or female, who doesn’t like plushies from fandoms. There is something about seeing a character in cute squishy form that appeals to lots of people and there is so many to choose from. Most fandoms have a plushie form for characters, especially creatures. If you can’t find an “official” one (like this adorable wind rider cub by Blizzard Entertainment) then check out sites like etsy and deviantart for handmade wonders.

Virtual Gifts

Virtual gifts come in various different shapes and sizes, and can be tailored to your friends interest. If they’re a gamer chances are there is some form of virtual gift (like World of Warcraft’s adorable Mischief pet!) or currency you can get for them. There’s also a bunch of online subscriptions or paid services that might interest them, such as more icons on Livejournal or a core upgrade on Deviantart. The best thing about virtual gifts is you can usually buy something for someone from another country without any hassle. Virtual gifts don’t have to cost money; if you’re handy with photoshop why not make your girl friends some graphics? Make some icons, maybe a desktop/phone wallpaper or even a banner for their blog.

Apparel

Being a geeky girl means sometimes finding suitable apparel that isn’t just for guys, unisex or looks baggy and unflattering is a chore. As a geek and a girl that makes you perfectly suited to finding fantastic apparel for your friends that matches their fandoms! I absolutely why I love online stores like Jinx and Wild Bangarang, because they make products for women and have attitude. Like this amazing World of Warcraft T-shirt, perfect for Galentine’s day in my opinion!

What do you think? Do you celebrate Galentine’s day or never heard of it (like me!)? What would you give your gal pals as a special treat?
