Birthstone Series Wrap Up

Birthstones Series - Wrap Up

Just under a year ago I debuted the first of what was to be a 12 month series; The Birthstone series. It was a monthly blog series in which I created a pinterest board and used it as a mood board for a style guide for that month’s birthstone. I loved the idea, I loved doing it, and I’m still somewhat annoyed that I didn’t get to post a style guide for each individual month. I did, however, keep up with the pinterest boards and intend to keep doing so on a much lesser scale though. I had originally intended to post this months style guide for Amethyst, and then later in the year catch up on the months I had missed. The problem with that is that I would constantly be playing catch up and adding more work, rather than admitting that there are some lessons I learned from this series. Instead I decide to post this wrap up, concluding the series and providing links to all the published style guides and each individual pinterest board in one place. I also wanted to use it as a way to reflect on what lessons I learned and how to adjust my planning for future blog series (oh yes, there are more to come! 😉 ).

Lessons Learned

The biggest lesson was that I over-reached, and wanted to do more than I really should have. The style guides needed to be more compact, and involving less work on my part. If I want to spend hours and hours pinning things to a pinterest board, then so be it. That’s my choice and I enjoy it; it’s also great for when I’m feeling really crappy and want to be productive. Likewise, thanks to my tablet I can do it on the go and anywhere in the house. The problem was trying to then convert that into a blog post; I had to wade through loads of links and save loads of images, resize them and so forth. It took so long. The next series is going to be more definitive, more to the point and less work in that department.

I also wasn’t as sharp with affiliate links as I should have been and probably lost out on a lot of great opportunities. I’ll be working on that in the future.

The Complete Birthstone Series

And finally, here it is! The complete set of published pinterest boards and the published accompanying style guides. I will continue to add things I find to these boards so take the time to follow them, whether it’s your birthstone or you simply love the colour palette for that month!

How to Style Peridot, August’s Birthstone!

Birthstones Series - Peridot - August's Birthstone

The Birthstone series will be exploring the world of birth stones and creating a pinterest mood board filled with style ideas related to that month’s birthstone and related colours. There will be women’s fashion, jewellery, make up, accessories, colour palettes and some home decor items thrown in too. This series will be posted on the third Saturday of every month.

Two birthstone posts in a row, but don’t worry Sharing Saturday will be back to normal next week and I’ll be looking at the gorgeous Sapphire for September’s birthstone in three weeks time.

Peridot was a tricky one to style, mainly because it’s quite a bright shade and I have to admit it’s not one I’m naturally attracted to. I love the gemstone and jewellery, however, it was the fashion items, dresses and make up that proved hardest to find. Some companies and retailers seem to be quite fond of the colour for women’s fashion, while others tend to lean towards khaki and olive. Unlike Emerald, Peridot is a much lighter and yellow hue shade of green. It’s spring greens, lime, chartruese and then the more mellow shades of olive and khaki. My tip for styling it, if you’re like me and not too keen on going for full on lime green, is to add it in little ways. A spot of make up here, some beautiful peridot jewellery to spice up an outfit or even just a flash of colour for your shoes or bag. It’s also a colour that goes really well with yellow, darker blues and purple which you can see in the colour palettes below.

How to Style Ruby, July’s Birthstone

The Birthstone series will be exploring the world of birth stones and creating a pinterest mood board filled with style ideas related to that month’s birthstone and related colours. There will be women’s fashion, jewellery, make up, accessories, colour palettes and some home decor items thrown in too. This series will be posted on the third Saturday of every month.

So… it’s August and this is the birthstone for July… yep I’m running a bit behind. I hope to have Peridot up next weekend so I should be back on track for one birthstone a month again!

Ruby is one of two red birthstones I’ll be looking at in this series, so I had to differentiate between it and Garnet. For styling ruby I went with warmer tones; poppy red, warm oranges and yellows. There’s some darker tones of red as well to represent the darker hues of rubies, however, generally anything burgundy I’ll be saving for garnet in January 😉

What do you think; is ruby  a birthstone you think you could style? I’ve always been partial to red and never been afraid to wear it, but I know for some people it can be a bit overwhelming. Do you think you would go all out in one of the ruby dresses or would you be more subtle and add a touch of red with some accessories?

I hope you’ve found something you like in this post, and if not there’s plenty more on the pinterest board! I’ll be adding a few more things to the board from time to time so don’t forget to follow it. If you have something you think I should add, especially if it’s something you’ve created let me know!

How to Style Pearl, June’s Birthstone

How to Style Pearl, June's Birthstone

Pearl is a gorgeous one to style because it is open to so many different shades; pearls aren’t always white! They can be cream, beige, pink, blue, lavender and even darker shades of grey, blue and lavender. Essentially, they’re the dusty hues of these colours. So look for dusty pink, dusty blue and dusty lavender to pop some colour in. Due to the multi-tonal nature of pearls you can mix and match, and I’ve found a lot of great floral and patterned tops that use these colours.

The Birthstone series will be exploring the world of birth stones and creating a pinterest mood board filled with style ideas related to that month’s birthstone and related colours. There will be women’s fashion, jewellery, make up, accessories, colour palettes and some home decor items thrown in too. This series will be posted on the third or fourth Saturday of every month.

How to Style Emerald May’s Birthstone!

Birthstone Series: Emerald, May's Birthstone

After the less than inspiring transparency of diamonds last month I was looking forward to the vibrant and lush shades of green that make up May’s birthstone Emerald! Emerald can range from a bright green to a forest green, and even slightly darker. As we’ve got Peridot coming up in a few months (August) I had to be super careful not to overlap so I’ve stuck to deep greens of a cooler shade, forest greens and very few khaki greens. The pinterest board features items and colour palettes that cover all these shades, as well as gold, peach, navy and purple.
