60 + Imaginative Fandom & RPGs Inktober Prompts!

Inktober 2018 Prompts - Fandom & RPG

Welcome to the fourth in a series of posts featuring prompts for Inktober – This week the theme is Fandom and RPGs! If you’re not familiar with Inktober I’ll be going into more detail in just a moment but basically it is an art prompt that takes place every October using only ink. There is a set prompt list created by the original Inktober founder, however, it has become such a wonderful community project now that there are so many new prompts popping up each year. Every year Inktober is responsible for the creation of so much fantastic art and connecting people with new artists. It is also so inspiration for many people and with so many fantastic prompts to choose from there is something for everyone! So I wanted to share them all before October comes around so people can take part or start following hashtags to see the wonderful art that emerges from these prompts.

Disclaimer: I have done my best to only include prompts in which the creators have clearly stated they are happy for people to share and take part in. If I have accidentally included a personal one or you wish for your prompt to be removed from this list please let me know and I’ll be happy to oblige.

About Inktober

Inktober is an art prompt that was originally created in 2009 by Jake Parker who wanted a challenge to develop his inking skills. It has grown from there to become a worldwide event with thousands of artists of all skill levels taking part. The prompt consists of 31 words that act as a prompt, an idea for an ink drawing for each day. As explained in the FAQ section of the Inktober website participants are welcome to use whatever medium they want and interpret the prompts in their own way. That includes working with calligraphy and lettering if that is your field of interest. In general the rules are pretty much lax about everything; if you want to do one a day or several in one day then that’s fine too! The whole point is to get together, challenge yourself and most of all have some fun doing it 🙂

Below is the official Inktober 2018 prompt list:

Fandom & RPGs

We’ve had Magic & Fantasy, Horror & Supernatural and Nature prompts, and now it’s time to take inspiration from the fandoms we all know and love. Whether it be your favourite video game that you’ve logged hours into exploring or beating that level, that TV show or anime you love to binge, the timeless movie classics or the books that give you endless pleasure. These prompts are dedicated to all things fandom – and RPGs! With the likes of Critical Role and other groups streaming their DnD sessions more people are becoming roleplaying geeks which is fantastic to see. So you’ll also find in here a bunch of DnD and roleplaying related prompts including one for Critical Role and Exalted.

For Inktober, I’m going to be doing Kaitober if that is even a thing. I’ll make it a thing. I kind of want to promote some producers that use Kaito in their songs by drawing fan art of those songs throughout October. If you all want to join and blow up the Kaito tag that would be awesome. For those who don’t know who or what Kaito is, he is a computer software called VOCALOID that is used to create songs. He is the first male Japanese VOCALOID. All copyright goes to Crypton Future Media and the Song Producers (and Internet Co. for a few songs in the playlist…). I’ll just be drawing fan art because Kaito needs all the love. I made a playlist of all the songs featured in this Prompt in order. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9N3Or5H6rljdPNPegTswJd547L-TIkDt #vocaloid #kaito #kaitovocaloid #kaitober2018 #inktober2018 #myprompt #projectdiva #kaitov1 #kaitov3 #cryptonfuturemedia #inktoberprompts2018 #inktoberprompt #kaitober

Geeking by In July & August

Just Geeking By in July & August

It has been a crazy few months and I had no intention of doing a double Geeking By segment again, although considering how these two months blurred into one it does seem very fitting! I will be returning to the regular format of once a month in September, but for now, time to cast my mind back to July.

Holidays

Most of July was spent in London and Dorset. We headed down to London for a few days and the to Dorset (which I wrote about in my photo blog!) and then back to London to rest before we headed home. It was out first time flying since Chris was diagnosed with his heart condition so it was pretty scary. There’s no reason he can’t fly, we have just been avoiding it because using airports are more of a hassle, super stressful and taxing on our bodies. We prefer to use the train even though it’s a longer journey because you’re sitting down for it. An airport journey is almost just as long because you have to get there so early to get through security and so on. This time I firmly put my foot down and said that we were getting mobility for both of us. It wasn’t an easy decision, and it felt super weird being wheeled about the airport but it was the right one. Especially as the day before our first flight I had a migraine all day and slept terribly so I had zero energy. I’m hoping to write up a blog post about the full experience so I won’t ramble too much more about it.

We were back home for nine days before we were off again! I was happy to let our first holiday be a work free trip, however, I totally didn’t forsee the troubles I would have with such a short gap between trips. Even though we didn’t really need to unpack or even wash clothes (my mum had gotten pretty much everything washed and dried in London; one benefit of a heatwave) I just felt like I had so much to do and couldn’t settle at all. I got absolutely no blog work done at all during that time which set me back a lot. It didn’t help that our holidays completely clashed with the new World of Warcraft expansion coming out and the pre-events, so we were fitting those in as well.

Chris and I at the Family 60th Birthday Party in Harrogate

Once we actually got going our second holiday was fantastic. We were down in Harrogate (north England) visiting Chris’ family who I’ve only met once several years ago. We get on so well with them and we definitely will not be leaving it so long for a second visit this time. We were down for a 60th Birthday and stayed for a long weekend. We had an absolute blast catching up with everyone and meeting new members of the family, or those we’d kept in touch with on Facebook but yet to meet in person.

Health

My health has been a bit all over the place. For the holidays it was fantastic. We were both feeling great and we were active; and yes, I know that if you keep active you stay active. It wasn’t even that we came back and stopped being active that was the issue, because we didn’t! It was a few weeks after when PMT rearer it’s ugly mush 🙁 I have no idea what is going on with my cycle. I’ve been discussing changing my pill with my doctor because it’s been going a bit bananas for a while now but we wanted to focus on getting the right balance with the migraine medication and anti-depressants. The last time we spoke we were just putting the finish touches to one of those so I should be able to change the pill now. I’ve had problems with upping the latest dose of my migraine tablet, although I think that was due to me having such a bad cycle and PMT and also taking it at the wrong time. I’ve changed when I’ve been taking it the last few days and that seems to be working much better for me. It’s not making me feel as drowsy so hopefully that has fixed the problem. Health Update

Mindfulness

I started a new mindfulness course as soon as got back from Dorset and other than a huge admin hiccup that almost saw me kicked off the course before it even began (and thus stressed me out!) it’s been going great. It’s week 7 next Tuesday and I’ve only missed one session guys!! That’s like a miracle for me. I have been pushing myself hard, sometimes a bit too hard as I found out a few weeks ago. I didn’t know at the time that I’d picked up stomach flu though so the day after was a massive bust day for me. My body was totally like ‘WHAT DID YOU DO?!’. A few days later when I realised that it wasn’t an IBS flare up it all became clear, which was a bit of a relief because it meant I hadn’t gone backwards (something I was worried about). I’m still have a few fatigue bust days which is why I missed one session and this week I had another one of out the blue. The topic for the week was something was going to be really important for me personally so I rearranged to go the next day. It was nerve racking going with a different group – especially as another admin/communication mess up made it stressful again – but I was right and it was a super important session for me. By the end of it I felt so much better.

This is the first time I’ve gotten this far in the course and I’m into new territory now, learning new things. There are three weeks left now and then one follow up session in December. It was initially scary to think that I would one day finish the course, however, I am ready to do so now. I feel that I have all the tools I need to go out and live mindfully on my own. I’m now putting it into practise without even realising it. The biggest test was last weeks homework in which we had to go unguided for the first time, something that has always scared me. I was surprised at how easily I did it. I’ve now been mixing unguided mindfulness with steaming (sticking your head over a bowl of hot water and covering yourself with a towel) which has the bonus of making both activities so much easier. I have always hated steaming despite how good it is for my rhinitis, hay fever and migraines. I get congested a lot and steaming is the best course of action but I’ve never been good at sitting still doing nothing, let alone with a bowl of of hot water beneath my face. So I decided one day to give it a try with an unguided mindfulness practise and I think I managed about 10-15 minutes! I don’t time it, I just go with the flow and do however long feels right and when I’m ready to stop I count 10 breath cycles (in 1, out 1, in 2, out 2, and so on). It’s been helping my physical and mental health as well as doing my skin some good to boot! ((Mindfulness Photo by Andrew Bui on Unsplash ))

Gaming

Well, naturally I’ve been playing Battle for Azeroth the new World of Warcraft expansion. I started levelling my priest with Chris and we took our time exploring and completing each zone. We’re now completed all of the Alliance zones and we’re working on the questlines left over such as Jaina’s questline and the War effort one in Zandalar. So far I’m really enjoying it, but still getting a feel for everything so just a brief update on that just now. I’m about to start levelling my druid and I think I’m going to have a few characters in Tiragarde Sound just outside Boralus so I can start herbing and mining for other professions. Apparently it’s pretty good for XP too so they will probably get a good chunk of levelling done too!

Dino in Zuldazar in the Battle for Azeroth Expansion

I’ve been playing two mobile games as well; Merge Dragons and Hogwarts Mystery. I started playing Merge Dragons in the airport and became hooked on it. It’s sort of a merging came like Bejewelled and Candy Crush but in a world building setting. So instead of a flat board you have a whole camp but to build it up you have to merge 3+ of each items. To discover the next level of an item you combine three lesser items, and you then keep building lesser items into bigger and bigger items. Some of the items are buildings, while some are trees, plants and mines. You also have your dragons who gather resources for you and once again you combine three eggs to make one dragon and three little dragons into a bigger dragon. I’m really enjoying it and they have regular events as well which are great fun too! Here is a screenshot of my camp to give you an idea of what the game looks like:

May Camp in Merge Dragons Mobile Game

Hogwarts Mystery is the Harry Potter game that came out months ago and a lot of people played it for a bit then stopped because they were put off by the energy cap. I stuck with it and it’s become a firm favourite of mine because the story has become really good. I really have to know what happens next. I recently completed the quests to become a prefect and an animagnus! The fact that they have put them in as timed events so if you fail then that’s that, you’ve failed to become them, and I think that’s a really good idea. Of course you can easily complete it by buying gems to ensure you win, or restart the game to get those achievements, but for me it personally adds a sense of achievement to the game. Sure there’s thousands of other players who have achieved it too but I had to actually work for it. I didn’t buy any gems, and it is perfectly possible to do without gems. I used some to finish my prefect quest only because my tablet started to play up and eventually broke during the questline so I kept losing progress. I also just got enough gems saved up to buy my first pet!

Hogwarts Mystery Game - Animagnus Quest Complete!

And of course, just as I’m working on this blog post and talking happily about all this I managed to wipe my entire game save… /sigh In short it was due to a bug with the game wanting you to constantly reconnect with facebook – which you have to do in order to play the game – and when you do so it asks you to save over the current ‘blank’ game. I hit the wrong one and just wiped my entire game save. So I’m now hoping that the customer services team can roll me back. A quick google shows that they have done that for people and I think me buying my cat or starting the new year will probably be a good point for that. So cross your fingers for me!

Over to You!

So how was your summer? Mine ended up being a lot more eventful than I planned! Did you go anywhere nice? Have any surprise trips?

What are your plans for September? Anyone starting a new course or school? I’m planning to get back into the swing of things with blogging and then it’s time to tackle that dissertation once and for all!

Harry Potter fashion on the UK High Street!

Geek on the High Street - Harry Potter Fashion

As my instagram followers know I’ve been obsessed with the new Hogwarts Mystery game so when I started seeing Harry Potter bits while searching for Disney last month I knew I’d found this month’s Geek on the High Street theme! Unsurprisingly since it’s a British based Fandom it’s pretty much everywhere these days and as we get closer to the next Fantastic Beast film more and more things are popping up in the shops. So here’s some of my favourite picks!

Don’t forget to check out the pinterest board below to see the rest of the goodies I found 🙂

George at Asda

George at Asda has a few bits and bobs including this Harry Potter Glitter Slogan T-Shirt which features one of the most famous quotes from the franchise. This cute Pyjama Shirt and Shorts set has a very classy look about it, and is much more subtle in it’s design. Finally something a wee bit cheeky, but I had to include them as they’re just awesome; a pair of Gryffindor Knickers.

House of Fraser

House of Fraser is newcomer to Geek on the High Street, and while it’s not quite gotten to fashion items yet I’ll accept accessories and be happy at the progress! They have some great Harry Potter bags, and I’m a total sucker for tote bags so I’m in love with this Hogwarts Crest tote bag and Voldemort tote bag. There’s a few more bags on the pinterest board, however, this Hogwarts Crest Print Backpack really stood out as it’s a different style from what you normally see. These are probably official merchandise, however, it’s still great to be able to pop into a store in your local area and check them out instead of having to hunt down a stockist or order online.

Sports Direct

Despite Fantastic Beasts being the lastest addition to the franchise, Sports Direct was the only place where I found anything dedicated to it. They had the official Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film logo t-shirt and then this quirky Witches Live Among Us! t-shirt which I think is great. They also had two other official t-shirts available; a Hogwarts t-shirt and a Gryffindor t-shirt.

Argos

Wait, Argos does clothes? No, you’ve not missed anything. They don’t sell clothes, but what they do sell is jewellery and they have an abundance of Harry Potter jewellery! As with the Sports Direct t-shirts it is the official merchandise, however, being able to pop into your local Argos (FYI for you non-Brits out there Argos stores are really common) and actually hold the product in your hand before buying is a luxury most geeks don’t usually get. There are loads and loads of bits available. I didn’t even pin every single item on the pinterest board as I would have been there all afternoon 😛 So what I did do was pin one of each design and from what I could see there’s at least two types of necklaces, a charm, a set of earrings and possibly a keyring for each design available.

These are my favourites from the bunch! 1. Ravenclaw Pendant, 2. Hedwig Necklace, 3. Love Potion Slider Charm, 4. Sorting Hat Earrings. 5. Sterling Silver Lightning Bolt Crystal Pendant (this bad boy is much more extravagant than the others and costs a mighty £59.99 compared to £9.99 for other pendants) and 6. Something a little different; Deathly Hallows Watch.

Primark

You know how the saying goes; saving the best for last and I have. When Primark launched their Harry Potter range everyone heard about it, geeks and all. It hit the papers, the national news, everything. I’d heard of it – as I said, it was difficult to miss – but due to illness I’d never actually seen it. Well now that Primark have updated their website I’ve seen it and woah, mumma. I can see why people went crazy. It is a thing of beauty. Now I just wish they would do it for every franchise! It was incredibly hard to just pick a handful of items for this post so I limited myself to six. Pretty much half the pinterest board is Primark stuff so head over there and check it out now!

They’ve got some nifty pyjama sets including this Hufflepuff Pyjama Set, Hufflepuff’s rejoice there’s a set dedicated just to you. It’s often the most overlooked house so it was nice to see them getting recognition! These Navy Harry Potter Pumps were among a few pairs of shoes I saw on Primark and they were the only store to have anything in the footwear category. They have a wide range of jewellery and accessories, including house sets like this Slytherin Jewellery Set and other themed ones like this Blue Potion Jewellery Set. And then there’s this super adorable Gryphon Keyring which I’m totally in love with! There’s a whole set of keyrings and badges of magical creatures/fantastic beasts in this style and they’re all so cute!

Over to You

My 5 Favourite Fictional Mothers [5 Fandom Friday]

This week’s prompt was for retro video games, but sadly, I didn’t really play video games back when they could be considered retro. So I’ve gone back a few years and picked one I could answer; mothers! This one still took a while for me to get into, and I really need to read/watch more stuff that has actual mothers in it. I went through a mental list of most recent books read and every time it was ‘mother dead/MIA’. I also didn’t want to fall back on old favourites that I’ve mentioned before in other ways (Leia, Padme from Star Wars for example).

Favourite Mother - Keladry's Mother

Ilane of Mindelan

Kel’s Mother

What I love about Kel’s mother Ilane is that she’s a fighter and a noble lady. In the world of Tamora Pierce’s Tortal series Kel is the first lady knight to come along after the infamous Lioness, Alanna. It was a big step for Tortal, let alone Kel and her family, and while Ilane wasn’t originally sold on the idea of her daughter becoming a Knight – not because it wasn’t something girls did, but because she wasn’t certain her daughter was choosing what was best for her. Once she knew Kel had truly chosen what she wanted to do, Ilane supported her daughter whole heartedly. She’s forthright, and a fighter in her own right, instilling respect and love in her children. When she heard that her daughter in law had insulted Kel, Ilane made sure that she learned her lesson. She is respected by a foreign nation not because her husband is the diplomat, but because she fought to save something sacred to them. ((Image Source – Tamora Pierce Wiki))

Favourite Mothers - McGarrett

Doris McGarett

Steve’s Mum

I’m going to have to put this one under a spoiler tag because it’s near impossible to talk about this character, let alone do her justice, without giving away spoilers of Hawaii 5-0. ((Image Source – Springfield TV Screencaps))
Doris isn’t really what anyone would call a good mother. She faked her own death when Steve and his sister were just kids, and Steve only found out she was alive by basically being nosey and figuring stuff out on his own. Would she have ever popped back up if he hadn’t? Probably not. Yet Doris is one of my favourite mothers. In short; she’s a total badass. She may suck at being a mother, and doing motherly things, but she loves her kids and would do anything for them. She did. She made the ultimate sacrifice and removed herself from their lives when she realised she couldn’t do the good mummy routine. She’s the type of person that has to make the hard choices, and she does. Add to her sarcastic and witty attitude, and banter with her son, and you can guarantee that an episode with her will be great fun.
Favourite Mothers - Catherine

Catherine Bordey

Camille’s Mother

This is probably one of the few examples where a main character has left the show (Death in Paradise) and their mother has remained a regular cast member. From the first time we met Catherine I was blown away by how savy, down to earth and caring she was to everyone she meets. If you get on her bad side you’ll regret it, but if she likes you and you respect her than she’s always there for you. I love the newest development to her character in the last season and think that she will do a fantastic job in her new role. ((Image Source – Red Planet Productions))

Favourite Mother - Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley

The Weasleys’ Mother

I’ve talked about my love for Molly and the Weasleys before, so it’s not really a surprise to find her on this list. Despite having such a large family, Molly has so much love that it spreads to both Harry and Hermione. Hermione will later become her legal daughter in law, but while the Trio are kids, Molly makes them all feel like they’re part of one big family. Molly isn’t a push over though, as we see when she sends Ron a Howler and, of course, at the Battle of Hogwarts when she protects her daughter. She’s a fighter and a lover, because some things – like family – you fight for with everything you got and this is something that she teaches to all her children. ((Image Source – Pottermore))

Favourite Mother - MiraxMirax Terrik Horn

Valin and Jysella’s Mother

It was hard for me to pick a mother from the Star Wars universe, not because they’re so few but because they are so many. I wanted to choose one of the lesser known mothers from Legends, and in the end Mirax won. Mirax essentially had three children; her two kids and her Jedi/Rogue Squadron pilot husband, Corran. She was also the only one with no Force powers, and marrying into the Corellian Jedi traditions. Thankfully as the daughter of the infamous smuggler Booster Terrik, Mirax is more than capable of looking after herself and giving it as good as she gets. When her children end up in deep trouble, with the entire Galaxy pretty much gunning for them, Mirax will do whatever she has to to protect them.  ((Image Source – Star Wars Wiki))

Are you familar with any of these mothers? Who are your favourites?

Geeky Girl Tag

The Geeky Girl Tag
I love surveys, memes, challenges – anything that asks me to answer things that I haven’t thought up myself. I’ll often repost those ‘ask me…’ graphics on twitter and instagram to see what people come up with. So when I saw this geeky girl tag answered by Kitten at The Howling Wolfheart I had to jump in!
The tag is originally by Cassie at ZombieGoddess Beauty and she has also done a Gamer Tag too!

1. What is your must-have tech gadget?

Once upon a time I would have said it was my PC, however, after a year of having my tablet it wins this award. I love how much I can do on my tablet, how I can read books, comics, play games, leave myself notes, social media and so on. Only thing I don’t use it for is blogging, I much prefer an actual keyboard for typing.

2. Which house do you belong to in Hogwarts?

I am in Ravenclaw! You can read more about my life in the HP universe in this post from 5 Fandom Friday’s Potter month last year 🙂

3. Who is your favourite Doctor?

10! I do love all the other new Doctors (sorry, I’ve not watched any older stuff yet!) in their own way but the first one that springs to mind will always be David Tennant’s Doctor 🙂

4. If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?

I would probably go with someone old, wise and immortal who has travelled and seen so much. I think the Doctor or Captain Jack would be awesome, and likewise, Yoda too.

5. What is your gaming system of choice?

PC 🙂 Consoles hurt my fingers 🙁

6. If you had a super power, what would it be?

Healing; as a spoonie the idea of being able to ease someone’s pain sounds like the best superpower of all to me.

7. What is your favourite fantasy world?

One, just one? Oh man… I’m sorry, I can’t pick just one. It would be a toss up between Azeroth (World of Warcraft), Tortall (Tamora Pierce’s novels) and Terre D’Ange (Jacqueline Carey’s novels)!

8. If you could be any fictional race, what would you be?

Twi’lek! I love Twi’leks so much, they’re beautiful, graceful and I could be purple!

9. Star Trek or Star Wars?

Pft… you need to ask? 😛 😉

10. List your top 5 geektastic movies or TV Series.

I’m going to go with TV Shows:
