Geeky Girl Tag

The Geeky Girl Tag
I love surveys, memes, challenges – anything that asks me to answer things that I haven’t thought up myself. I’ll often repost those ‘ask me…’ graphics on twitter and instagram to see what people come up with. So when I saw this geeky girl tag answered by Kitten at The Howling Wolfheart I had to jump in!
The tag is originally by Cassie at ZombieGoddess Beauty and she has also done a Gamer Tag too!

1. What is your must-have tech gadget?

Once upon a time I would have said it was my PC, however, after a year of having my tablet it wins this award. I love how much I can do on my tablet, how I can read books, comics, play games, leave myself notes, social media and so on. Only thing I don’t use it for is blogging, I much prefer an actual keyboard for typing.

2. Which house do you belong to in Hogwarts?

I am in Ravenclaw! You can read more about my life in the HP universe in this post from 5 Fandom Friday’s Potter month last year 🙂

3. Who is your favourite Doctor?

10! I do love all the other new Doctors (sorry, I’ve not watched any older stuff yet!) in their own way but the first one that springs to mind will always be David Tennant’s Doctor 🙂

4. If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?

I would probably go with someone old, wise and immortal who has travelled and seen so much. I think the Doctor or Captain Jack would be awesome, and likewise, Yoda too.

5. What is your gaming system of choice?

PC 🙂 Consoles hurt my fingers 🙁

6. If you had a super power, what would it be?

Healing; as a spoonie the idea of being able to ease someone’s pain sounds like the best superpower of all to me.

7. What is your favourite fantasy world?

One, just one? Oh man… I’m sorry, I can’t pick just one. It would be a toss up between Azeroth (World of Warcraft), Tortall (Tamora Pierce’s novels) and Terre D’Ange (Jacqueline Carey’s novels)!

8. If you could be any fictional race, what would you be?

Twi’lek! I love Twi’leks so much, they’re beautiful, graceful and I could be purple!

9. Star Trek or Star Wars?

Pft… you need to ask? 😛 😉

10. List your top 5 geektastic movies or TV Series.

I’m going to go with TV Shows:
  • Supernatural
  • Eureka
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Scorpion
  • Bones
11. List your top 5 favourite video games.
  •  World of Warcraft
  • Dragon Age (whole series)
  • Fable III
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Guild Wars 2

Tagging

I don’t have anyone in particular in mind, I’m late to the party so many people have already done it! So please tag yourself and let me know in the comments if you take part 🙂

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Fandoms I'm thankful for

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy is easily the fandom I am most thankful for because it saved my life. Many times over. That isn’t me being dramatic. My teenage years were difficult, I was bullied a lot, and started suffering from depression without even realising. It was a dark time, and the many lessons of Buffy not only got me through it but helped me be stronger. Later during an emotionally abusive relationship I picked up the self help book What would Buffy do? and despite the cheesy name it is a very good read. This is still my go to show when I feel absolutely miserable and like the world is ending because I’m thankful that Buffy taught me that even when the world is ending, you can still fight and win.

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For - Star Wars

Star Wars

My number 1 fandom, and this is the one that started it all. I don’t think I would be into as many fandoms, or into the sci fi and fantasy genre if I hadn’t fallen in love with Star Wars. It has given me so much joy (and tears) over the years and continues to do so. It also taught me just how far our imagination can go, so I’m thankful for Star Wars teaching me that our imagination is endless.

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For - Kushiel's Legacy

Kushiel Legacy

These novels by Jacqueline Carey helped me to recognise a side of myself as genuine and right, not wrong and something to be afraid or ashamed of. There is so much strength in the protagonist, Phedre, and it is beautiful and incomparable. I’m thankful for having my eyes open to new possibilities and being taught to love as thou wilt.

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For - Doctor Who

Doctor Who

It was hard to pick the 5th fandom for this list, and in the end I chose Doctor Who because it has opened so many doors for me. It has broadened my horizons, and led me to find the wonderful talents of so many actors and authors. Without it I’d have never gotten to know the work of the amazing John Barrowman, and the lovely Elizabeth Saden who sadly passed away in 2011. I’m thankful for Doctor Who introducing me to many wonderful individuals and characters.

5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For - World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft

Gods, how do I explain how much this game has done for me in my life? It has been a bumping road, with many breaks and issues and yet it has given me so much in return. It has helped me learn that even if I’m sick, I can still do something productive and not feel entirely useless. It was the first video game that I could actually play, and led to me becoming a gamer and a youtuber. It has given me so many friends and some crazy guild meets, and of course, my amazing and loving fiancé of 9 years. I’m thankful for World of Warcraft bringing light, friendship, healing and love into my life.

5 Characters I Want to Dress Up as for Halloween [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Characters I want to dress up as for Halloween

marajade

Star Wars – Mara Jade

My favourite all time character, so of course she has to be first on this list! Her outfit is very simple to make and I’ve dyed my hair the correct colour in the past so that’s also easy!

leia

Star Wars – Leia

Sadly, Mara is no longer actual Star wars canon (yet) so my actual canon choice which most people would recognise is Leia. Particularly this outfit as I have wanted to dress up in this iconic outfit since I was a teenager!

belle

Disney – Belle

Despite loving Disney, I don’t feel a big attachment to many of the female protagonists so this was easy to narrow down. Belle is a fantastic character, and a book lover to boot!

phedre

Kushiel Legacy – Phedre

This is definitely one for the daring list, but I love the idea of the marques (full back tattoo) while I couldn’t have a permanent one (I’m too ticklish!) I’d love to have one for Halloween or a costume ball.

kaelea-copy

World of Warcraft – My Main

If I had the time, the skill and the ability to recreate some of the gorgeous characters and appearances from World of Warcraft I have a feeling I’d never stop. Choosing an NPC is insanely difficult, but I’d love to dress up as my main character, my human priest.

5 Geeky Tattoos I Want [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Geeky tattoos

When I first started this prompt I thought I’d have to change to prompt slightly, and then I began to realise that there were no examples of tattoos out there that summed up what I would ever get. So I ended up doing the prompt properly 😀 As a Libra I love art, but I’m also very picky. On top of that I’m very ticklish and one of my conditions means my skin does odd things. So these are more of a theoretical list of geeky tattoos that I would get.

  marquePhedre’s Marque

Kushiel Legacy by Jacqueline Carey

If you’ve been reading my blog you’ve seen me mention this series a bazillion times now. The marque is a beautiful back tattoo that is completed in stages and while it represents freedom and other things in the fandom, to me personally it represents something deeply personal. A lot of people have found themselves changed and moved by the series and there is a whole page of the author’s website dedicated to fan tattoos based on Phedre’s marque. I would need to have something specifically designed, something to incorporate the different elements of my personality and spirituality if I ever decided to take the plunge. I doubt I could handle a large version, but a smaller one somewhere less ticklish might happen one day.

yubyub“Yub, Yub, Commander”

Star Wars Quote

I’m a massive Star Wars geek, so for me a Star Wars tattoo would have to be suitably geeky and something other fans would recognise. For me this would be the quote ‘Yub, yub, Commander’ from the Star Wars EU (now Legends) X-Wing series. It’s an ongoing joke through the series involving the idea of an ewok pilot;

His name is Kettch, and he’s an Ewok.
No.
Oh, yes. Determined to fight. You should hear him say, ‘Yub, yub.’ He makes it a battle cry.
Wes, assuming he could be educated up to Alliance fighter-pilot standards, an Ewok couldn’t even reach an X-wing’s controls.
He wears arm and leg extensions, prosthetics built for him by a sympathetic medical droid. And he’s anxious to go, Commander.
Please tell me you’re kidding.
Of course I’m kidding. Pilot-candidate number one is a Human female from Tatooine, Falynn Sandskimmer.
I’m going to get you, Janson.
Yub, yub, Commander.
―Wes Janson and Wedge Antilles

You can read more about Kettch, his exploits and the pranks involving him here. If you’ve not had a chance to read these novels; do! They may not be canon any more but they are hilarious.

buffy“The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.”

Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I’ve talked about how much Buffy means to me and how much it got me through in my teen years and early 20s. There were so many lessons from that show that have stuck with me, but this one in particular rang true. My life is hard, I’m not gloating or looking for sympathy, it’s a simple fact. This quote is a reminder to me that it will be hard, it is hard for everyone, and I am not alone. There is light in the darkness.

hippogryph.v6511moonkin_hatchling_a.v6052Hippograph Hatchling & Moonkin Hatchling

World of Warcraft

I love World of Warcraft and the lore of the universe, so naturally I’d have to have a tattoo from the game. I’m a pet battle addict and these are my two favourite pets (appearance wise, don’t ask me for my favourite battle pet!).

shootthewiz

“When in doubt, shoot the wizard.”

Advice from Numair to Kel in Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce

This is my literary geeky submission to this list. I love this quote from Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce, and like the Star Wars one it is something that only fans of the books would recognise.

My favourite Fantasy books

Sharing Saturday: my favourite fantasy books

It was World Book Day on Thursday so it seems fitting for this weeks Sharing Saturday to be about books! A while ago Lianne asked for suggestions for fantasy novels and that got me thinking about my favourite ones. So here you go!

alannaSong of the Lioness Quartet – Tamora Pierce

This is the first book set in the land of Tortall and is followed by two other quartets, a duology, a prequel trilogy and a short stories anthology. I absolutely love these books even though they are written for a younger audience and I’ve lost count of the times I’ve re-read them. The first book begins with two twins; Alanna and Thom who are being sent away to learn magic and to become a knight. The problem is only boys can become knights, and Thom absolutely hates fighting while Alanna hates magic. So they swap places and Alanna pretends to be a boy. There’s the obvious problems, such as avoiding swimming to keep her secret, as well as the usual issues of puberty such as crushes and bullying. Add in a whole bunch of secrets and conspiracies and you have a very awesome series. The other series involve characters from the books prior to them, save for the prequel ones, so you get to see how the characters grow and evolve.

Kushiel's_DartKushiel Legacy by Jacqueline Carey

Like the book above, Kushiel’s Dart is book one in a set of three trilogies set in the land of Terre D’Ange. The universe of the novels is based on an alternate Europe (and later further afield) and while you can recognise similarities between the lands and races, it’s unique enough that it isn’t cliche or irritating. The first trilogy focuses on the life of Phedre, a young girl sold by her parents to become a courtesan. In this world the courtesans of The Court of Night-Blooming flowers are legendary, beautiful and trained in their arts. Love is sacred, relationships nothing to be ashamed of and rape is one of the vilest crimes that can be committed. There are 13 houses of the The Court of Night-Blooming flowers, with each one specifically catering to certain needs and desires. For example, Balm, are experts in relaxation and soothing ills, Bryony focuses on wealth and wagers, and Gentian are interpreters of dreams.

Before she can become a part of one of the houses, Phedre catches the attention of a spymaster and is trained in the arts of seduction as well as spycraft. What she doesn’t know though is that she’s involved in a game far darker and deeper than anyone could realise. These novels are filled with love, desire, heartache and treachery that will leave you weeping.

summonerChronicles of the Necromancer – Gail Z Martin

I admit it was the pretty cover that first drew this to my attention and I am so glad. It is one of my favourite fantasy series and I’m so sad that there’s no more stories to be told of Tris and his friends. Tris ends up on the run after his older brother murders his father and frames him. His friends stick with him and along the way others end up joining them. If you’ve read Tamora Pierce’s novels then consider this similar to her Tortall novels but aimed at adults. They’re much longer, more in-depth but with the same fantastic and humorous ragtag band of friends. I also love the magic in these novels, and it’s interesting to have someone take on necromancy as something positive rather than dark and evil.

blackmagiciansBlack Magician Trilogy – Trudi Canavan

I only found out recently that these novels are young adult not adult, and I’m not sure I agree with that age group. There is a sequel series and a prequel as well. The prequel explains and explores ‘history’ in this book and fills in a lot of blanks, so I would definitely not read it before the initial trilogy. I’m currently working my way through the sequel series. The novels follow a girl, Sonea, who is born in the slums of the city until she is noticed by some Mages in the Magicians Guild. Sonea has magic, abilities that only the upper class should have (or so was believed until Sonea came about). She’s taking under the wing of her mentor and like the Tortall and Harry Potter novels the series follow her adventures and troubles as she learns about her abilities.

Unlike those novels, black and white isn’t as easily distinguished. These novels deal in grey and Sonea ends up in the middle of it. There’s more secrecy in this series compared to the ones above, surrounded by historical events that no one really knows anything about. At times it got a bit slow, especially at the start of the first book, but then the author drops some tiny tidbits and before you know it you’ve devoured the entire book 😀 I was very lucky that my fiancé bought me all three for Christmas so I was able to go straight to the next one without a wait.
