Geeking By in April

Geeking by in April

Last month disappeared in a whirlwind and April crept by so slowly! It wasn’t an easy month in many ways and a lot of work got done behind the scenes rather than on the front of the blog. I did work out some awesome things that I am happy to finally share with you!

New Blog Schedule Thingie!

Totally technical term there, however, it is an accurate one because I am using ‘schedule’ in a lose way. I need something flexible so that I don’t get overly flustered or bury myself in work or guilt for not getting work done. I am hoping to start getting this up this month. Like I said, I’ve been putting the ground work in for a bunch of stuff behind the scenes even if I’ve not actually posted anything. So here’s a sneak peek of how each month will hopefully start to look!

Zodiac Series – Taking over from the Birthstone series this will be on the same thought train but on a smaller scale. I’m setting up one pinterest board with a section for each zodiac sign filled with products based on each sign, as well as links to fashion and beauty gurus explaining how to identify your specific sign’s style. The accompanying blog post will have a lot less work in it and more information gathered from resources with some examples I’ve found and I’ll highlight some of my favourite products I’ve found on my hunt. Most of the links will be on the pinterest board though so I won’t need to find and edit 100 odd images this time.

Blog Links – I really liked the idea of a blog links list, however, I failed to find a way to make it work. Instead I’m incorporating this into a smaller blog series, so once a month I’ll pick a theme or type of blog link i.e. website listings, linkies, book related, etc. and post a list of 10 of them.

Tramsmog Tuesday – Old news really in comparison, but I love it and I will be bringing back my World of Warcraft Transmog Tuesday back every week.

10 Things – This one is purposely vague because I wanted something that didn’t have a real definition, something that I could just do what I wanted with each month. If I wanted to do 10 crime tv shows, or 10 cute animal tops then I could. This will be the wild card every month 🙂

Geek on the High Street – I love this series, but it was sooo unorganised, no real time frame and so many faults. Then I had the revelation to make it a monthly themed feature! I can plan it around upcoming movies, events (Star Wars day, for example) and so on.

Geeking By – You’re currently reading it! The monthly update of my personal life, blogging, studying, goals and, of course, geeking!

Let me know what you think in the comments! 🙂

Surviving

I never did a word of the year this year because I just couldn’t decide on one. Now four months in and I’m pretty sure it’s going to end up being surviving. That is literally what this month has been about. I have felt guilty at the lack of productivity and moving forward, but to be fair I don’t see HOW I could have functioned. At this point I’m just happy I managed to keep basic things like clean washing and stuff going! I mentioned last month that I chose to swap medications and this month was the horrible period of no meds and starting new meds aka still having no meds because they haven’t kicked in yet. I was doing ok until about the 16th and then it has literally been a migraine every. single. day. Yes, over-exaggerated punctuation is needed for that one. It has been hell. In a weird way it was a relief because for a while there I was like ‘oh crap, what if these aren’t migraines, they’re something else like sinuses or stress etc.’ and then my body went, NOPE HAVE THEM ALL! I had one last night, currently as I write this I have a niggle but so far I’m ok *crosses fingers, touches wood, prays to every god imaginable, sacrifices first born*.

I started the new medication for migraines a week ago so it should start kicking in soon, however, it’s a slow building one so I up the dose again in a week anyway. It’s been making me super dizzy but that IS a well known side effect and it seems to be adjusting. It is also helping me sleep better; my previous medication wasn’t a drowsy one, while the one before was so I’ve been missing that kind of medication just to help knock me out at night. I’ve noticed since the ME/CFS set in that sleeping has become harder for me, and also even more essential because to put it in basic terms my body is a very leaky fuel tank. Sleep is replenishes the fuel and my body is just leaking it all over the place, so I have been needing 12 + hours for several years now. I’m just getting myself back to a 12 hour rotation this month and being on this medication I’m actually sleeping better and waking up feeling more refreshed. So yey for a side effect working for me. Also, I may have been a little TOO happy that weight loss is a side effect….

That brings me onto the other medication which for privacy reasons I am purposely not naming, sorry, just some stuff is private and some people aren’t all sunshine and rainbows. Since stopping it my appetite has really decreased and considering I was on this for over 11 years I have to wonder how much it has added to my weight gain. I also started protein shakes for breakfast as planned so hopefully should start to see some change soon. I started the new medication today, and had to giggle at the warning label; do not eat with grapefruit. Seriously not an issue for me. I do not eat fruit (I can’t stand the texture!), and not a huge fan of the taste of grapefruit juice either.

Getting down with the Dinos

(aka Battle for Azeroth alpha)

We started wandering around Zandalar in the alpha and will continue to do so in the beta. There are so many cute dinos every where! I may have gotten just a tiny bit distracted…. 😀 So far the quests have been super fun on the horde side, I hope the alliance ones are just as good – we’re keeping them a surprise until BFA actually launches. I tried to play discipline, but I am just so out of practise with it and possibly even out of love with it now. It just doesn’t suit my play style any more so I’m playing as shadow – and holy void energies batman, we have actual AOE! You can see all my screenshots so far over here in the Battle For Azeroth gallery. They DO contain SPOILERS so look at your own risk!

In other Geekery

I’ve been working my way through more DC comics, catching up to date and getting my head hurt with some timey wimey stuff. I’m still with the bat family and have a few of them to catch up with, and I’ve also read The Flash, Teen Titans and the Dark Metal event now too. I also completely fell in love with Supersons, the adventures of Superboy (Jon Kent) and Robin (Damian Wayne). It is hilarious, heart warming and absolutely brilliant. The bad news is that it has been cancelled and will be ending 🙁 Damian is a complete little git, but he has a heart of gold and him and Jon are adorable together. Next up is Justice League, Titans and the Doomsday event. TV wise it has also been a catch up time with NCIS, Private Eyes, Bull and Criminal Minds.

Over to you!

And that mixed bag of fun was my April, how did yours go?

My Goals for August

Monthly Goals - August

Last time I got one of these done was June and then about a week later I had the flu. I’m now back on the blogging bandwagon and ready to get organised! Yeah, it’s half way through August already but I needed to do this, needed to put things into perspective and work out where I want to go this month. I’ve just started a new physio course called ‘Moving into Balance’ which essentially is an hour of theory/planning and then 30 mins of exercise. The aim is to help me find a baseline and start working to avoid boom and bust days, i.e. a good day followed by a bad day, and to stabilise my energy levels. One thing we’ve been asked to do is mindfully plan where we want our days to go, so I’m going to use this monthly post as a larger way to keep myself on track.

Personal

At the moment I’m taking it easy with some things, such as my diet, because flu majorly screwed a lot of stuff up. Last week was also hard due to appointments and other things going on, so I’ve had to recover a bit from that too. This week there’s just my physio so it’s get back on track time with planning, projects, and schedules. Hopefully by the start of September I’ll be back on track!

Dissertation

I am currently sitting at half way through my 20k word limit for my first rough draft. I think I have something like 6 months or something before the next exam board (as long as my continuation of studies is accepted), aka my new deadline, but I want it done before that. My physio’s throwing me through a loop at the moment, so taking my time and building my strength up to get back into writing again.

Projects

  • Blogging – Top of my list is to get back to blogging and schedule posts a month or more in advance! I already started by prepping my monthly goals posts and making up transmog sets for several weeks.

  • Directory Updates – Thanks to Photobucket’s ridiculous changes all my buttons for my directories have been messed up and it coincided of course with the flu. So I’m still playing catch up and several are a mess. Not to mention way overdue to a link check.

  • Gallery Updates – I officially finished the gallery move, now I just need to add my latest screenshots and do some admin stuff.

  • Bullet Journal – I want to use my bullet journal to track my energy levels, so I need to implement that and catch up with some other bits.

World of Warcraft

I don’t want to overdo things since there is only a few weeks left of August so just a few things;

  • Finish Death Knight Artifact Quest
  • Finish Death Knight Campaign
  • Complete Death Knight Mount Questline
  • Try for Mage Hidden Artifact skin
  • Obtain Trial of Style Sets
  • Collect Inscription Recipes from Raids & Dungeons

Screenshot Challenge Wrap up & June’s Prompts

Screenshot Challenge

May was a total whirl and some of these got posted a bit late due to life and technical issues! But here’s the full months wrap up and June’s prompts for Screenshot Challenge!

Favourite Hero

Wooo it’s the first prompt for May for #justgeekingbysc #screenshotsunday ! As it’s free comic book time I picked favourite hero for today’s prompt.
World of Warcraft, like all games, is filled with heroes and yet one stood out to me straight away. Maybe it’s because I just watched this cinematic the other day, but Anduin was the clear winner of this title for me. We’ve watched Anduin grow up, get kidnapped, find his way and lose his father and thus, becoming King of Stormwind – and leader of the alliance? I’m not 100% sure on that one, but either way he has a heavy mantle on his young shoulders.
I won’t lie; I cried when I watched this cinematic. The whole questline dealt with Anduin’s loss, as well as the loss of his whole Kingdom in terms of the soldiers that perished that day alongside their King. As players we can just res and run back, and we don’t often really think about the amount of losses. There’s been a few examples in the past that have been horrific, but Legion is really pushing the emotional boat out and making it clear just how dire the circumstances.
Anduin is one of the few priests amongst the leaders that I feel I can actually relate to. I love Velen, but lets face it, he’s thousands of years old and a prophet. I love how we’ve been on every step of Anduin’s journey alongside him, like we have our own characters, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for him. He has so much power, such an amazing grasp of the light and the world around him. He’s not his father and that’s good, it’s what Azeroth needs.

Cherish

Week 2 #justgeekingsc #screenshotsunday – Cherish. This prompt was inspired by Mothers Day, so all the best to mothers of all kinds today. I couldn’t really find a mother screenshot that also worked for ‘cherish’ so here is some adorable cuteness along with some Cullen hotness from Dragon Age: Inquisition! Treasure is my 2017 word of the year, so cherishing the ones and things I love is something on the forefront of my mind right now. It’s really easy to forget what we have, to get lost in the pain and darkness of every day life. Cherish the good things you have and those you love.

Pastels

Week 3 of #screenshotchallenge #justgeekingbysc and the prompt is pastels. Here is a gorgeous pastel sunset/moonrise I came across in World of Warcraft tonight. The view of the mage city of Dalaran across the sky from Suramar.

Water

The prompt was water, and as one of the primal elements if features in pretty much every game ever and in so many different ways. From pets, to creatures, to gorgeous scenery like this shot from Guild Wars 2.

June’s Prompts!

Screenshot Challenge - June Prompts!

I had some fun with this one! 4th June is National Cheese day and as tempting as it was to pick just ‘cheese’ I went with the more general Food for the first week. It’s the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II and that seemed like a good excuse to ask you to share some Royalty for week two! Week three sees things hotting up as we head towards the Summer Solstice, so Sun seemed like a natural choice for the third week. Rounding off the end of the month is Rainbow to represent June as LGBT Pride month.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading through my wrap up, and would love to see some others joining in! It’s a fun thing for me to do on my own so while I can keep flying solo, I’d love to see what everyone else is doing too! 🙂 As always follow me on instagram to see my posts every Sunday!

Screenshot Challenge Wrap up & April’s Prompts

Screenshot Challenge

The first month of Screenshot Challenge has now finished and it’s time to wrap up! If you’ve been following me on social media then you’ve probably seen all this, but I wanted to document it all here too. You’ll also find April’s prompt at the end of the post. Enjoy!

Current Game

Screenshot Challenge - Current Game

I’m currently playing Guild Wars 2 with my fiancé. I’ve played most of it including the Heart of Thorns expansion, and this is his first time playing it. We’ve just finished the Living World seasons set before Heart of Thorns, and just heading into the expansion.⠀

This is a screenshot from the cinematic trailer for Heart of Thorns featuring members of Destiny’s Edge and Trehearne.⠀

City

City - Bioshock Infinite

The most beautiful city in a game I have ever seen is the floating city of Columbia in Bioshock Infinite and I’ve seen a lot of pretty cities. This one just stands out from the rest; probably due to the amazing quality of graphics in the game itself.⠀

What is your favourite city in a video game?⠀

Green

Green - Dragon Age: Infinite

There’s a lot of game stuff I associate with green; dragons, druids, hunters, necromancers – but the one that always sticks out? Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you’ve played the game, even a little bit, then you know what I’m taking about!

Luck

Luck - World of Warcraft

This screenshot from World of Warcraft is such an epitome of my luck in the game that I laughed out loud when I found it. ⠀

I have a history of being lucky with some mounts, and I was one of the first on my server to get this mount, the Headless Horseman’s mount. The gear my main is wearing also has it’s own story of luck attached to it. I had just joined a guild when this staff, Staff of Immaculate Recovery, dropped. I think it was literally my first run and due to some rule, or some technicality related to DKP, it went to me. Instead of the other priest in the raid who had been waiting for it for ages… it was pure luck that it happened that way. It sucked for the other player, and I’ve been in a worse situation so I feel for them, but people still remember that this happened 😛 ⠀

How about you? What does luck mean to you in a video game? Are you lucky with gear and rolls? Tell me your stories and don’t forget to share your screenshots!⠀

Next Month’s Prompts!

Screenshot Challenge - April's Prompts

I took some inspiration from April’s calendar and events to put together this months prompts. It’s National library week in the US from 2nd – 8th, so that prompt is asking you to represent your favourite lore. The 12th is National Pink day, so pink is the colour of choice this month. You guessed it, rabbit is for Easter and the Brits among you might recognise the significance of Dragon on the 23rd. It’s St George’s Day and St George slew the dragon. And finally, Pay it Forward Day is at the end of the month (28th) so the final Sunday is dedicated to friends! I can’t wait to see what people come up with and hope you’ll enjoy following me along on social media, especially instagram with the hash tag #justgeekingbysc.

Screenshot Challenge

Screenshot Challenge

A while back I had the idea of doing an instagram challenge for video games. That idea then evolved into this; the Screenshot Challenge. The idea of this challenge is to join in the weekly twitter and instagram tag #screenshotsunday and making things a bit more interesting by having a weekly prompt. Starting from March 2017 I’ll be posting a set of prompts/challenges for each sunday. They will be purposefully open or vague so you can interpret them as you wish. There are only two rules; follow the prompt and post on a sunday (as much as you can, if you’re a bit late don’t worry – it’s the taking part that counts 🙂 ).

How you join in is totally up to you! You can post on any social media with just an image, using the hashtags #justgeekingbysc and #screenshotsunday. Or you can post a blog entry with more details and screenshots. It is entirely up to you! You can choose to stick to one game, or change each week. It can be on any format, and from any time – you can take screenshots that day if you wish or use one taken previously.

Posting to Instagram

I wanted to add a little bit about posting screenshots to instagram. You could, technically, just take a photo of your screen using your phone. What I find works better is using a site like Later.com which allows you to upload images from your PC and send it to an app on your phone. This then downloads the image on your phone and lets you open it in instagram. If you know of any other apps or websites that do the same thing please let me know and I’ll add them here.

Another method suggested by Kathy is to post the screenshot to twitter first, then save it from twitter to your device. You can then pop it onto instagram and voilà!

I will be taking part on instagram @JustGeekingBy so feel free to follow me and join in! I can’t wait to see what you guys have to share 🙂
