10 things on my Birthday Wish List!

10 Things on my Birthday Wish List (2018)

It’s my birthday in a week (9th October!) and for once I’ve actually remembered to do a birthday related post! I decided to start out simple and give you guys a glimpse of what is on my birthday wish list. Being an October baby I pretty much spend most of the year planning for my birthday and Christmas, and then rinse and repeat again the next year. Our anniversary is also in October so I can’t even use that as an excuse for some goodies either! It does mean that by the time October rolls around I have a solid idea of what I want and any impulse buys have long lost their luster.

Blog Domain Name

1. Blog Domain Name

It is finally time to move this blog to it’s own domain! It’s a big step with lots of SEO bits and bobs (and probably a massive headache), but it needs to be done and to be honest, I want it done! I wouldn’t say I’ve been putting it off, but rather it just didn’t feel like the right time before. Now the blog feels much more grounded and it’s grown into what I wanted it to be. It’s time 🙂

iphone Camera Lens Kit

2. Iphone Camera Lens Kit

Ideally a new camera would be great, however, the next step for me would be a dslr camera which I don’t actually know how to use properly! Chris has one and he’s happy to let me use it and, more importantly, teach me how to use it. So there is little point in me investing in a camera right now. I do have my own camera but it’s so outdated that my iphone actually gives me far better quality photos so I’ve been investing in equipment for that. My first was this fantastic tripod which has been so valuable. I can use it as a “selfie” stick or I can use it as a tripod – and it’s got bendy legs so I can put it at weird angles for photos or wrap it around anything. This lens kit would give me everything I really want from a dslr camera without having to pay for one and without needing to learn all the technical settings, which I have to admit my ME brain fogged mind is struggling with. There are more expensive options but I’d prefer to try a cheaper option and see how it works and then upgrade at a later date.

L'Oreal Smooth Sugar Nourish Cocoa Face And Lip Scrub

3. L’Oreal Smooth Sugar Scrub

As I reported in my last Sample Shoutout I received a sample of this and absolutely fell in love it. It has been the only product I’ve ever found to help me with one of my beauty problems so getting hold of a full sized tub of the Nourish Cocoa Face And Lip Scrub has been a priority since I tried it!

Calligraphy pen set and ink cartridges

4. Calligraphy Pens

Last Christmas I got a huge haul of bullet journal goodies from The Works and they were all great! I got a small calligraphy pen set and while I haven’t really been using it for calligraphy per say I have swapped to writing with them. The problem is that I want to use all the inks and all the colours and I have just one pen. The set had three nibs and just one pen. So this time I’m upping my game and eyeing up this Sheaffer Calligraphy set which comes with three pens not just the nibs. This means I can have multiple inks on the go without having to swap nibs or worry about them drying out. I still have plenty of ink cartridges left, however, the pack was not well balanced in colours so I’m also going to get a pack of cartridges by the Manuscript Pen Company Creative. They’ve had great reviews and have some nifty colours that my other pack didn’t have!

5. Nail Polishes

My nail polish collection is dying. The only new additions it has had in years have been courtesy of my mother in law who has either bought be colours that aren’t my cup of tea or the same colour of turquoise in about 5 different shades (I’m not joking). The problem is that I don’t really have the money to go on a full on nail polish shopping spree – especially not if I get everything else on this list. So I’ve had to think about it and I’ve come up with a few solutions; nail polish subscription boxes such as the two pictured above (Mani and Lola and MeeBox), a decent nail polish advent calendar this year (I’ve yet to decide on which one), buy an advent calendar from a previous year for a discounted price (such as this Technic Advent Calendar) and buy some gift sets or bulk sets of nail polish (such as this Rimmel London nail polish set). There’s also Primark and a few of the pound shops/discount shops that have started doing their own Beauty lines which are getting some great reviews so I’m going to check those out too. Hopefully by the end of that I should have a good start to a collection again!

Washi Tape

6. Washi Tape

Yep, I am a Washi Tape addict and my small meagre collection just doesn’t cut it any more. The time has come to invest in some more beautiful sets such as this gorgeous Starry Sky Washi tape set from 812 Journal. I much prefer to get sets like this at this stage so that I can build up a decent collection and then I can add individual tapes later on.

7. Mantaray Purse

Mantaray Embroidered Hummingbird Purse

I’m not really a big purse fan, or someone who buys them a lot – bags on the other hand I am really bad with especially when I’m on holiday. I don’t tend to find bags in my style until I go abroad to Europe or visit markets over here and then I want to buy them ALL. But purses I have a hard time finding one I like and so when I finally found a brand I liked I stuck with it. I think this will be my third Mantaray purse now and I literally wear them to death; my current one is falling to pieces. What I love about them is that they’re actually embroidered so you get that real texture feel rather than a plastically feel like some purses/wallets, and it’s just the right size for what I want. And Mantaray as a brand fits with my boho nature loving style too, and I just fell in love with the colours and design of this embroidered Hummingbird purse by them. I usually get my watches by them as well, and while I really need a new watch too my purse is literally falling apart and thus makes this list!

The Wet Brush Flex Dry Hair Brush Ombre

8. Wet Brush Hair Brushes

I’ve slowly been upgrading my beauty supplies, moving from cheaper versions to more professional and higher quality alternatives. So far I’ve upgraded my tweezers and my nail files and now it’s time for my hair brushes. I’ve been eyeing up the brand Wet Brushes for a while, and although I like their standard brush I think I’m actually going to go with these two instead. One is their Flex Dry Hair Brush which is designed to help you dry your hair as you brush it. I use two hair brushes; my usual hair brush and then an older one for when I’ve had a shower. My hair is so thick that if I use my normal hair brush to brush through my hair when it’s wet I just soak my brush. This wonderful invention though helps your hair dry as you use it and as I air dry my hair that makes it super useful for me! I’m also going to get their Shine Hair Brush as my normal brush as it has boar bristles and is a bit bigger than their standard brush – great for someone with long thick hair like mine!

DvDs or a NowTV Subscription

9. DVDs or NowTV Subscription

We are so behind on films, that there’s a lot of movie DVDs on my wish list – but as I’m also so behind on TV shows I’m  weighing up buying the movies on DVD against buying a NowTV subscription for a month. It might be cheaper and easier to do that so I can see all the movies and also get caught up on TV shows at the same time. We’re about four movies behind in the Marvel Cinematic universe, I’ve still not seen Solo and there’s loads of other movies like Oceans 8 too. While I’d love to be able to splash out and get them all on DVD it’s just realistically possible and as you can see this is down at #9 on my list so it’s not that high on my priorities either.

Miscealleous Beauty Products

10. Beauty Products

Thanks to my big beauty prize win most of my beauty needs are covered for a very long time, however, there’s a few things that are mainly every day restocks that I need. I was sent my first face oil as a product tester and it did wonders for my skin, and sadly, I finished it 🙁 So looking for a new replacement I’m going to try one from Revolution’s new skincare range. Namely their Skin Plumping & Hydrating Solution with 2% Hyaluronic Acid which is very close (if not the same) as the product I was testing just without the brand name and thus the massive price tag. Another product replacement for the same tester panel is B. Brightening Fruit Acid Cleanser. I’m not sure if this is exactly what I’m looking for, however, it’s the closest match I could find so I’m going to give it ago first. I absolutely love Cucumber Cooling Eye Pads for when my eyes are sore and tired and need to stock up on some new ones.

And then the other two products on my list are two new items that are treats for myself that I have been eyeing up for a while now! One is L’Oréal’s Infallible Total Cover Concealer Palette. I was going to go the full hog and get their foundation too, however, I’ve found that BB cream works so much better for me and I’ve also fallen in love with Garnier’s Skin Active BB Cream so there is no point in me getting another foundation I won’t use. I’ve heard great things about the coverage of this range and I want to try it out because my other colour correct palette is beginning to run out.

The other product is ALINICE Hair colouring material which is a form of styling wax  but coloured! I’m not quite ready to go the full bleach and dye route yet but I want to play around with some streaks and have some fun so I’m going to get a pot of this in purple. There’s some really mixed reviews and to be honest, I’m not too fussed if the product isn’t great as it’s only £9.99. I just want to see how I look with purple hair and decide if it’s something I want to do one day.

Everything Else

Naturally that’s not everything, not even close 😉

So just in case your curious about what didn’t make the top 10 cut you can view my full wish list here!

And don’t forget to check out the 10 books at the top of my TBR pile as they’re also on my wish list too!

Over to you

I hope you enjoyed having a look into my birthday wish list and getting an insight into me 🙂

When’s your birthday? Is it coming up, has it just gone? Or have you got months to go?

Is there anything you’re hoping someone gets you? How many hints have you dropped for it?

Interview with Designer Mija

Interview

Whenever I can I take the opportunityto interview someone from the online world. They could be someone creative, quirky, geeky or a fellow spoonie. I’m really not picky; the whole point of this is to open up dialogue, share with the world and if you wish, bring awareness to your work or a cause. Interviews are open to anyone who wishes to take part so if you’re interested in volunteering please check out the Interview information page.

This time Mija has voluntered to talk about her work as designer for the site Mind-Speaks.com, a site she runs with her two sisters. Read on to find out how she became a designer and what she brings to the sister’s creative blog.

The Interview

Hi. Please tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Mija and I am a 1 out of 3 sisters on Mind-Speaks.com! We all have different disciplines but I work on all things print and web for the site. Right now my favorite things are stickers and stationery.

How did you get into design?
I went to school for design and work as a full-time designer. Mind-Speaks.com lets me play and do fun projects I personally love!!

How many years have you been doing it?
I have been a designer for over 10 years. We started Mind-Speaks.com in 2010!

What does your design mean to you?
Doing designs for Mind-Speaks helps me really express what I like. I do designs that reflect my fandoms and hobbies! I also do freelance and design for other people. So when I design for Mind-Speaks, it’s truly for myself. I try to make things that I would use personally in my life!

What was the first time you realized that was what you wanted to do?
Probably in 6th grade, we got our first family pc – it was loaded with HP Print Shop. I would play all day on there designing greeting cards to send to family! Each one had A VERA CARD, printed on the back!!

I also grew up a huge fan of Lisa Frank, I collected stationery and stickers like most girls in the early 90s. That stationery influenced me even as a young girl!

What is your proudest moment?
We recently through an Usagi Birthday Bash! Probably one of my favorite things we have done! We got to meet new people who love Sailor Moon as much as we do AND give away tons of stickers and jewelry!

What was the first product/artwork you ever sold?
Oh, on Mind-Speaks.com it would probably be my Sailor Moon 3DS cases!!! I might actually bring them back!  Right now I am designing stickers and stationery sets on our Etsy.

What are your goals for the future? What do you hope to achieve?
To try to do more events, perhaps buy a table at an artist alley at a local con and join like-minded nerds!

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Stop when it is no longer fun.

Any advice for others wanting to get into design?
You have to think of the design of just more than art onto paper or web, textiles and tangible items also need to be considered! Especially if you are rebranding yourself! You have to also think about everything: fonts, colors, packaging….everything is representing yourself!

Now for some random questions…

If you were the god/goddess of anything, what would it be?
I would love to be a goddess of stationery! I love stationery more than any other paper items. I probably get way too excited when I see an amazing lined envelope!

What would your animal form be?
Oh, I hope it would be a bird. Flying would be amazing and a cooler way of traveling than running around everywhere!

Do you have any fun quirks?
I am a tad OCD, especially with color! Everything always has to be organized or lined up by color. I also love matching sets, so I tend to go overboard when wanting to add so many items into my stationery sets I design! If I see things in my favorite color, I tend to gravitate to it and hope they are also in my sisters’ favorite colors so I can also pick them up one. Especially stationery or washi tape!

Do you collect anything?
I have a nice comic book collection that I share with my husband, we also have action figures to match the comics we have been collecting! My craft area is filled with so many different shades and thickness of paper. also, have a nice vinyl collection of vintage showtunes albums! I bet that last one is random!!!

And finally; time for a shameless plug:
I would love you guys to check Mind-Speaks.com, my craft blog I share with my sisters. We post projects we are working on, DIY instructions, recipes and reviews on local nerd hangouts around Houston, TX. We also sell some stickers, stationery sets and other cutesy items! You can find us on Instagram under: mind__speaks and Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MindSpeaks

Groovy Gifts for Gemini Women!

Sorry Gemini! I didn’t forget you, I promise. As I explained in my update I lost a few weeks and I’ve been playing catch up. I knew I wasn’t going to make the ‘deadline’ (21st June) so I aimed for before the end of the month instead. Hopefully you’ll forgive me when you see what goodies I have in store for you 😉 As usual there’s a pinterest board filled with loads of things I’ve found on my search, and I’ve included the best and my favourites to show you in this post. About Gemini

Symbol: The Twins
Element: Air
Ruling Planet: Mercury — the planet of communication
Physical Attributes: Shoulders, arms, hands ((Symbol, element, ruling planet and physical attributes information credited to Astro Style.))
Traits: Witty, Charming, Adventurous
Colors: Orange, Yellow, Magenta
Fashionable Gemini: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Zoe Saldana, Natalie Portman ((Traits, colours and fashionable Gemini information credited to College Fashion.))

For Gemini’s style is all about three core features according to College Fashion; youthful, eclectic and funky. This is an expression of the dual nature of their star sign, and they can often be found mixing two totally different styles together. Somehow though they always make it work, while any other star sign would look a mess Gemini’s look playful and flirty. Who What wear agrees with this, and suggest adding classic staples in bright cheery colours to combine two styles. Colours they recommend for Gemini’s include vibrant yellows, orange, and magenta.

Halter-necks and shoulder-bare tops are a must have in any Gemini’s wardrobe, Star Sign Style explains as a Gemini’s best feature is the neck, the part of the body that divides into two, starting at the shoulders. They’re also known for being expressive with their hands so accessorising with some bangles and bracelets adds an extra jingle to your outfit.

For make-up it’s all about the eyes, Star Sign Style advises, explaining that Gemini have beautiful bright eyes full of sparkle that just need a little help to frame them. Pop on some eyeliner and use a highlighting shade (bright white is ideal they suggest) in the inner corner of the eyes and over the lids. Shimmering eyeshadows are also recommended, especially paired with a dark eyeliner.

Take that shimmer to your cheeks, Miss Malini says, and take inspiration from June’s birthstone the pearl with some pearlescent blushes to give you a nice glow. Embody the duality of your sign with sparkling eyeshadows combined with a contrasting bold liner to create a two-tone look. Keep your lips neutral to let your eyes do the talking, with shimmery lip glosses suiting Gemini’s best. As for a Gemini’s nails, Miss Malini says go bold and express yourself with vibrant colours, especially  Gemini’s signature colour yellow.

About Taurus

Symbol: The Bull
Element: Earth
Ruling Planet: Venus — the planet of beauty and love
Physical Attributes: Deep and soulful eyes, long and elegant necks, delicate jaw lines ((Symbol, element, ruling planet and physical attributes information credited to Astro Style.))
Traits: Hard-working, Resourceful, Reliable
Colors: Pink, Pastel Blue, Light Green
Fashionable Taurus: Jessica Alba, Christina Hendricks, Dianna Agron ((Traits, colours and fashionable Taurus information credited to College Fashion.))

College fashion explains that Taurus women love a classic vibe to their wardrobe with well-made clothing with unique detailing, which means they do ted to go for the more upmarket and expensive clothes. That doesn’t mean they can’t be patient though and wait for just the right bargain to save a few pounds! As their symbol the bull rules over the throat and neck pay attention to your neck area by drawing attention to it with scarves and necklaces.

This is seconded by Who What Wear who state that for a Taurus “style is synonymous with quality”, but don’t worry about holding out for that designer item. It doesn’t make you a label snob just because you know how to appreciate the finer things in life. They recommend Blues, earth tones, and neutrals as your complimentary colours.

For make up Star Sign Style says to take inspiration from Taurus’ ruling planet Venus and go for a feminine look. Pinks and florals in particular are flattering for a Taurus, and use muted pinks to accentuate your lips. Miss Malini offers more examples, suggesting earth-tones for your eyes such as taupes, emeralds and shimmery browns and embody your love for all things classic with a simple but classy french manicure.

5 Galentine’s Day Gifts Ideas [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Galentines Day Gifts

When I first saw this prompt I was like, huh?! I was not at all familar with the concept so had to look it up.

“Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

– Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knopein Parks and Recreation

This is something that I can embrace and totally get on board with. Growing up I found it very difficult to have female friends because I was more of a tom boy and into geeky stuff instead of swooning over the latest celebrity or caring what was in fashion. As I’ve grown older I’ve gotten more female friends, some of who are in relationships and others who are single. I know every year that Valentines day can be a bullet through the heart for those who have yet to find their one, so the idea of saying ‘screw partners’ and spending time with independent amazing women sounds bloody awesome to me!

My female friends cover a wide range of personality types and interests, but this is a fandom prompt so I went geeky and stuck to fandom related things. Maybe next year I’ll do a more inclusive blog post for gift ideas for Galentines day. For now though, enjoy!

Books!

Well, duh, of course this is top of my list! I think there is nothing more amazing or special than gifting someone with a bunch of books. If they have the same interests as you then it’s lovely and personal to give them a selection of your favourites. If they’re into different genres then check out their TBR or wish list (most book worms have one!) and spoil them with a selection. There’s even the possibility of getting the same book for everyone and getting together again when you’re all finished; like a personal mini book group! The ideas and possibilities are endless. If you’re short on cash there’s sites like bookmooch and read it swap it, as well as charity shops so you can do good and spoil your gal pals 🙂 And if they’re an e-book lover don’t forget to check out my list of ways to get free e-books!

Stationery

Everyone uses stationery, geeks especially and thanks to sites like etsy there is an abundance of geeky stationery available online – like this fantastic stamp from biterswit! Whether your friend is just a post it note and pen kind of girl, or whether they’re a total bullet journal fan, there is something for everyone.

Plushies

I’ve yet to meet a geek, male or female, who doesn’t like plushies from fandoms. There is something about seeing a character in cute squishy form that appeals to lots of people and there is so many to choose from. Most fandoms have a plushie form for characters, especially creatures. If you can’t find an “official” one (like this adorable wind rider cub by Blizzard Entertainment) then check out sites like etsy and deviantart for handmade wonders.

Virtual Gifts

Virtual gifts come in various different shapes and sizes, and can be tailored to your friends interest. If they’re a gamer chances are there is some form of virtual gift (like World of Warcraft’s adorable Mischief pet!) or currency you can get for them. There’s also a bunch of online subscriptions or paid services that might interest them, such as more icons on Livejournal or a core upgrade on Deviantart. The best thing about virtual gifts is you can usually buy something for someone from another country without any hassle. Virtual gifts don’t have to cost money; if you’re handy with photoshop why not make your girl friends some graphics? Make some icons, maybe a desktop/phone wallpaper or even a banner for their blog.

Apparel

Being a geeky girl means sometimes finding suitable apparel that isn’t just for guys, unisex or looks baggy and unflattering is a chore. As a geek and a girl that makes you perfectly suited to finding fantastic apparel for your friends that matches their fandoms! I absolutely why I love online stores like Jinx and Wild Bangarang, because they make products for women and have attitude. Like this amazing World of Warcraft T-shirt, perfect for Galentine’s day in my opinion!

What do you think? Do you celebrate Galentine’s day or never heard of it (like me!)? What would you give your gal pals as a special treat?
