My Goals for March

Monthly Goals: March 2017

It’s been a few months since I did one of these. January was just a crazy mess and February was all about the chest infection. Time to get back on track!

Blogging

  • I have blog ideas coming out of my ears right now. Seriously, so many ideas so hopefully this month will see an increase in content!
  • Commenting; yep, still an ongoing issue for me and I’m slowly getting there. People have actually had comments left by me recently *gasp*
  • Work on Blog Promo Links List.
  • Work on SEO.
  • Pinterest images for entries.
  • Media Kit? Might be able to squeeze this in this month.

Bullet Journal

I started a bullet journal this year to coincide with my 2017 Word of the Year Treasure (read more here).  February was supposed to be my first month of trackers and as you can imagine, the chest infection threw that out the window. That means March is the first time tracking things, so I need to keep up to date with it and stick to it.

Challenges

I’ve just launched The Screenshot Challenge and I’m also taking part in Magical March hosted by Kayla. I’ll be posting a selfie every day and screenshots every Sunday on my instagram.

Gaming

Since December I’ve not been playing WoW. With everything that happened in December I just haven’t felt like being social and WoW is my social game. So I went back to Guild Wars 2 and Chris joined me, so we’ve been playing through that together; first time for him. I’m playing it pretty leisurely so I don’t have any specific goals, I’m enjoying just floating by!

I do want to try and start the Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC’s this month though. I was focused on GW2 and have been busy, so hoping to fit it in somewhere.

Reading

I have been in a slump since the start of the year. I’ve gotten through some comics, and that is about it. I still haven’t finished a book I started in November, not because there is anything wrong with the book, I just have no motivation to read. It could be because I’ve been so stressed and ill, or I’ve just not had enough energy to spare. I hope to change it this month and get back on track!

Convention Preparation

Last year I won 6 tickets to the Sci Fi and Fantasy Warriors weekender, a weekend of geekyness and meeting guests! There’s some great guests there including Nicholas Brendon from Buffy, Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf and Gareth David Lloyd from Torchwood. There’s also a masquerade ball, something I have been wanting to go to for so long! It’s at the end of the month so I need to get a bunch of stuff prepared:

  • Discuss and plan schedule for the weekend.
  • Test hair and make up.
  • Look up DIY masques and make ours.
  • Create blog business cards and get them shipped.
  • Prepare/collect items for signings.
  • Packing list.
  • Food/Meal planning.

Dissertation

My dissertation had to go on the back burner a bit due to my recent illness, so this month I really need to crack on with it. I’ve had to re-evaluate the way I’m approaching my research question so it is something more plausible. I’m currently looking at a possible diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and one important aspect of living with the condition is learning to pace myself. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have made some good head way with this!

Have you got any goals for March? Let me know!

Screenshot Challenge

Screenshot Challenge

A while back I had the idea of doing an instagram challenge for video games. That idea then evolved into this; the Screenshot Challenge. The idea of this challenge is to join in the weekly twitter and instagram tag #screenshotsunday and making things a bit more interesting by having a weekly prompt. Starting from March 2017 I’ll be posting a set of prompts/challenges for each sunday. They will be purposefully open or vague so you can interpret them as you wish. There are only two rules; follow the prompt and post on a sunday (as much as you can, if you’re a bit late don’t worry – it’s the taking part that counts 🙂 ).

How you join in is totally up to you! You can post on any social media with just an image, using the hashtags #justgeekingbysc and #screenshotsunday. Or you can post a blog entry with more details and screenshots. It is entirely up to you! You can choose to stick to one game, or change each week. It can be on any format, and from any time – you can take screenshots that day if you wish or use one taken previously.

Posting to Instagram

I wanted to add a little bit about posting screenshots to instagram. You could, technically, just take a photo of your screen using your phone. What I find works better is using a site like Later.com which allows you to upload images from your PC and send it to an app on your phone. This then downloads the image on your phone and lets you open it in instagram. If you know of any other apps or websites that do the same thing please let me know and I’ll add them here.

Another method suggested by Kathy is to post the screenshot to twitter first, then save it from twitter to your device. You can then pop it onto instagram and voilà!

I will be taking part on instagram @JustGeekingBy so feel free to follow me and join in! I can’t wait to see what you guys have to share 🙂

5 Geeky Expressions Only Your Friends Would Understand

5 Fandom Friday - Geeky Expressions

When compiling this list I noticed a pattern; most of my geeky expressions come from gaming. There’s a few others that didn’t make the list, like referring to a crack in a wall for Whovians, but most are those that have come up in my years playing World of Warcraft.

I think this is probably one of the most geeky expressions out there; even my dad uses this one. The best thing is that it can be used and applied to so many situations. Whether you’re seriously struggling with a problem, or having a laugh with your friends. It’s universal and everyone knows what it means.  ((Image Credit – Star Wars Uncut))

This is probably the most obscure one of the list, and is more something I say regularly and usually when gaming. In most games fire = bad. I’ll be raiding and Chris will ask why I died and this will be my typical response. ((Image Credit – Screencapped.net))

From World of Warcraft, this is a line uttered by Kael’thas after his demise in Tempest Keep. It’s become an ongoing long running joke in WoW, if a character dies or magically reincarnates you can bet someone will utter this line. ((Image Credit – EU Battlenet))

Although this one began in World of Warcraft, it’s another one that has become universal. There’s even a wikipedia page for it which includes a list of times it has appeared in TV shows and other places. It became a viral meme very quickly, and if you’ve not yet seen the original video then go check it out (don’t read the wiki page summary, you need to experience this for yourself first!). It’s become an every day slang for my guild and friends, with one us either quoting Leroy’s cry or saying “I’m just gonna leroy it”. I’ve had even non-gamers say this in conversation before, so it’s moved well beyond WoW. ((Image Credit – Hearthstone Wiki))

And the classic Illidain; You are NOT Prepared! His infamous line uttered before engaging in combat with a raid in Black Temple in World of Warcraft. This has become another viral saying/meme for the WoW community, especially when the latest expansion Legion was on the way. I’ve lost count of the many instances and times when this line has been coined. Just remember… you are not prepared!  ((Image Credit – World of Warcraft))

How about you guys; do you find that particular community or fandom has more expressions than another? Do you have a set of geeky expressions within a close group of friends or a whole fandom?

5 Galentine’s Day Gifts Ideas [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Galentines Day Gifts

When I first saw this prompt I was like, huh?! I was not at all familar with the concept so had to look it up.

“Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

– Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knopein Parks and Recreation

This is something that I can embrace and totally get on board with. Growing up I found it very difficult to have female friends because I was more of a tom boy and into geeky stuff instead of swooning over the latest celebrity or caring what was in fashion. As I’ve grown older I’ve gotten more female friends, some of who are in relationships and others who are single. I know every year that Valentines day can be a bullet through the heart for those who have yet to find their one, so the idea of saying ‘screw partners’ and spending time with independent amazing women sounds bloody awesome to me!

My female friends cover a wide range of personality types and interests, but this is a fandom prompt so I went geeky and stuck to fandom related things. Maybe next year I’ll do a more inclusive blog post for gift ideas for Galentines day. For now though, enjoy!

Books!

Well, duh, of course this is top of my list! I think there is nothing more amazing or special than gifting someone with a bunch of books. If they have the same interests as you then it’s lovely and personal to give them a selection of your favourites. If they’re into different genres then check out their TBR or wish list (most book worms have one!) and spoil them with a selection. There’s even the possibility of getting the same book for everyone and getting together again when you’re all finished; like a personal mini book group! The ideas and possibilities are endless. If you’re short on cash there’s sites like bookmooch and read it swap it, as well as charity shops so you can do good and spoil your gal pals 🙂 And if they’re an e-book lover don’t forget to check out my list of ways to get free e-books!

Stationery

Everyone uses stationery, geeks especially and thanks to sites like etsy there is an abundance of geeky stationery available online – like this fantastic stamp from biterswit! Whether your friend is just a post it note and pen kind of girl, or whether they’re a total bullet journal fan, there is something for everyone.

Plushies

I’ve yet to meet a geek, male or female, who doesn’t like plushies from fandoms. There is something about seeing a character in cute squishy form that appeals to lots of people and there is so many to choose from. Most fandoms have a plushie form for characters, especially creatures. If you can’t find an “official” one (like this adorable wind rider cub by Blizzard Entertainment) then check out sites like etsy and deviantart for handmade wonders.

Virtual Gifts

Virtual gifts come in various different shapes and sizes, and can be tailored to your friends interest. If they’re a gamer chances are there is some form of virtual gift (like World of Warcraft’s adorable Mischief pet!) or currency you can get for them. There’s also a bunch of online subscriptions or paid services that might interest them, such as more icons on Livejournal or a core upgrade on Deviantart. The best thing about virtual gifts is you can usually buy something for someone from another country without any hassle. Virtual gifts don’t have to cost money; if you’re handy with photoshop why not make your girl friends some graphics? Make some icons, maybe a desktop/phone wallpaper or even a banner for their blog.

Apparel

Being a geeky girl means sometimes finding suitable apparel that isn’t just for guys, unisex or looks baggy and unflattering is a chore. As a geek and a girl that makes you perfectly suited to finding fantastic apparel for your friends that matches their fandoms! I absolutely why I love online stores like Jinx and Wild Bangarang, because they make products for women and have attitude. Like this amazing World of Warcraft T-shirt, perfect for Galentine’s day in my opinion!

What do you think? Do you celebrate Galentine’s day or never heard of it (like me!)? What would you give your gal pals as a special treat?

5 Geeky Goals for 2017 [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - 2017 goals

I’m still playing catch up after the holidays so this is a few days late! As I’m going to be doing two other goal related posts, one for the new year and one for January, I decided to use this prompt to look at specifically fandom and nerdy related things I want to do in 2017.

Video Games

While World of Warcraft is usually my primary game, I do have a variety of games sitting around waiting for me to play. Chris and I often get stuff cheap in steam sales or Humble Bundles, as well as snatching up free games from Origin and Uplay. Last year I did terribly at finishing or even starting these games so 2017 I’m planning to finish 6 games. That’s 1 every 2 months roughly. I’m also planning to do more youtube stuff, for WoW and possibly other games!

Reading

I use Goodreads to track my reading and challenge myself to read so many every year. It keeps going up each year, with last year’s challenge being revised three times. I failed the third time, which is this years target of 300. I want to try to focus on finishing old series before I start new ones so I’ll be grabbing stuff from my local libraries and book mooch to finish those up (or get up to date). I also want to make my way through my massive amount of kindle books I’ve picked up for free from indie authors, so I’m going to be making ‘Book Bingo cards’ for some months. Here’s my January one!

Films

I’ve decided on a few film related goals for 2017, starting with watching every film we own. I’ve seen most of them, however, some I’ve slacked on and some were Chris’ before we got together and after almost 10 years together I still haven’t watched them. I also recall a conversation at uni last year with my classmates discussing ‘classic’ films, like A Clockwork Orange, and they were quite appalled at how many I’ve not seen. So I’m planning to remedy that! My idea of classic is probably not the same as everyone’s, and while there will be some old films from the 60’s and 70’s, I probably won’t be going much earlier. On top of these two goals, I want to catch up on films of some of my favourite actors. Some of them are no longer with us (Carrie Fisher, Robin Williams), while others (Harrison Ford) I’ve seen a lot of, but there’s still some I’ve not watched. Those are the few I can think of and will be my starting place for now!

Bullet Journal

I messed around with a notebook type bullet journal last year and found that having a nice bullet journal with a to do list for each week just doesn’t work for me. Incorporating the two just got messy and meant that I couldn’t keep things neat. So instead, that notebook is for notes and my weekly planner. I’ve bought a new, proper, dotted journal to keep an actual bullet journal for 2017.

Online Projects

2016 was a woefully fulfilling year for online projects, with my focusing on my Msc and my blog. I don’t have any major plans for new layouts for 2017, unless inspiration strikes, but I would like to change a few things around. Namely, my personal site photo gallery which doesn’t work and hasn’t for aggges. I want to move it to another script, and do the same with my screenshot and scan gallery. Speaking of scans; I have loads that need editing and made into png and brush packs for deviantArt. I’ve been slacking and would like to try to get into one a month. I have also been contemplating getting back into the fanlistings world for a while now. I left due to drama, but I’ve changed and I don’t think I’m going to take everything so seriously any more. I don’t intent to go crazy, just start out small and go from there.

Finally, I’ve been working on a big project that will either work really well or just collapse on itself. I started work on it a few years ago and it’s slowly bugging me that it’s still in limbo. I want to get it launched this year!

What do you think? Anything strike your fancy? I’ll be posting updates throughout the year so stay tuned 🙂
