5 Holiday Traditions [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Holiday traditions

New Bauble Each Year

After hearing others talking about this one I decided I wanted to start it from next year; then we realised we got a new one last year in our stockings and Chris’ mum got us one this year too! So that tradition is officially started!

One Present on Christmas Eve

This is a tradition that we’ve both had separately since we were kids, so of course we’re keeping it as a couple! You get to pick one, just one, present from under the tree to open. It’s not as easy as it sounds! As a couple we do have an additional rule; the other person is allowed to veto one or two presents if they’re extra special surprises.

Star Wars Cinema Trip

This is brand new from last year, and is most likely going to happen this year. As Chris has been ill and in hospital we haven’t been able to go see it, so we’re going to see it when we’re down in London for New Years. Last year we went with my dad, and we’re doing the same this year. Since there’s many more Star Wars movies to come (WOOT!) I can see this becoming a yearly tradition.

Stealing Meat from the Carving Board

This is my personal one which I have been doing since I was a kid, and have subsequently done every time there’s a roast being carved. It started at Christmas though when we had big family gatherings at my nan and grandad’s house and while the adults served the food up, we kids would do little jobs like take stuff to the table. I’m not sure if it was my dad or my grandad – or both 😛 – who started it, but they’d sneak me bits of meat as they cut the roasts.

Pigs in Blankets

When I was a teenager my grandad decided to add something new to our Christmas dinner; pigs in blankets. He’d seen it somewhere, tv, newspaper, I don’t know but he was doing it and enlisted me to help. It is one of my fondest memories of my grandad before he died when I was 17, and I try to make pigs in blankets every Christmas. Sometimes not from scratch/by hand as he did, but we have them each year and not just because they taste awesome.

My Must See List of Christmas Episodes [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Christmas episodes

I’ve tweaked this weeks prompt slightly; it was christmas movies, but since I could only come up with 2 I decided it would be better to do TV episodes instead!

Bones

Season 1, episode 9 – The Man in the Fallout Shelter

This was one of the first episodes in Bones for me where things got real, where anything could happen and people could die. An odd episode for a favourite christmas list, but beneath the scary their was heartfelt beautiful love for one another.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Season 3, episode 10 – Amends

Amends is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful TV episodes ever and it was a Christmas episode. In the episode, we meet the first evil for the first time as it torments Angel, and Buffy delivers a very important home truth to him: “Strong is fighting! It’s hard, and it’s painful, and it’s every day. It’s what we have to do. And we can do it together”. For me personally, this hit a cord with me as an angsty different teenager and has stuck with me as my health problems have developed. I also appreciated then, and still do, a Christmas episode that was darker and not all about hope. Christmas isn’t always a happy time, and sometimes a TV show needs to show all sides of life.

A Town Called Eureka

Season 4, episode 21 – Do you see what I see.

To understand why this episode is so awesome I need to explain a bit about the show. Firstly, it’s not an animated show. Yep. Eureka is a secret town in the US where a bunch of super geniuses invent things, safely… well, they’re supposed to be safe 😛 Lots of accidents happen, and in this Christmas episode everyone gets turned into a cartoon version of themselves. It’s hilarious, funny, and totally bonkers.

Leverage

Season 3, episode 14 – The Ho Ho Ho Job

I loved this episode because of the way the characters interacted with one another, the whole Christmas time thing and their undercover roles as mall employees. Eliott is a very grouchy santa, and the team’s nemesis played by Wil Wheaton pops up as well. It’s a fun filled jaunt to restore a santa’s good name, Christmas done Leverage style.

Supernatural

Season 3, episode 8 – A Very Supernatural Christmas

I think the look on the boys’ faces says it all 😛 Christmas with the Winchesters, and of course, they end up with someone trying to kill them. Namely, two Pagan gods who want to eat them for dinner. It’s an aptly named episode, and I particularly liked the fact that Pagan mythology was being introduced into the Supernatural universe, which had been pretty much dominated by Christian mythology up until that point.

Do you have any favourite Christmas TV episodes? How about movies? Let me know in the comments <3

Get Creative with Christmas Design Resources!

Sharing Saturday: Christmas resources

December has firmly started and Christmas is on the way, which means it sounds like a good time to share some christmas graphic design resources. You can use these to spruce up your blog or website for a festive feel, or to create graphics for social media or as gifts. As usual I’m nabbing them from Deviant Art, enjoy!

Disclaimer: The work here is displayed only out of admiration and credit is given for every image (I use the ’embed’ code directly from dA). If you are the artist and want your work removed please leave me a comment. If you like some of the art here please take the time to visit the artist’s DeviantArt and/or leave a comment to let them know. This is probably obvious, but: this post is very image heavy.

5 Geeky Things on my Christmas Wishlist [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Christmas wishlish 2016

This weeks prompt was christmas songs, but as I did that last week I decided to pick one from previous years. You’re probably thinking, hey, didn’t you just post your wish list? Well, my holiday wishes list is a general one and this, this is the super duper fandom edition!

Books!

So my to read list is always growing and I’m pretty sure will never end, which I’m ok with. However, there are a few books on my wish list that I really want to read ASAP.

  1. Poison Fruit by Jacqueline Carey – She is one of my favourite authors but the libraries rarely have her books, so I usually get them as gifts as I like having a copy of them too. Last year I got the previous book in the series and this is the next one.
  2. Keeping it real by Justina Robson – I have never actually read anything by this author, but have been eyeing this book for a while now. It’s available at the library, however, the author is going to be at a convention I’m going to next year so I’d love a hard copy so I can get it signed if I enjoy the book.
  3. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – I was just going to pick this up at the library but decided that even if I’m not impressed with it (I’ve heard mixed reviews) it will still go with our collection 🙂
  4. Broken by Marianne Curley – Again, another favourite author of mine and again, so hard to get hold of her books from the library. This is the second book in her new series.

Funko Pops!

Goodness, it was hard to narrow this down to just these 6 and I may have got a bit lost on amazon browsing new ones… ahem.

  1. The Flash: Barry
  2. Star Wars Rebels: Hera
  3. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Agent May
  4. Agent Carter: Peggy
  5. Blizzard Games: Tyrael
  6. Disney: Belle

Video Games

  1. Heart of Thorns Expansion for Guild Wars
  2. Starcraft II Collectors Edition
  3. Bioshock I and 2 Remastered
  4. DLCs for Dragon Age: Inquisition

Blizzard Store

  1. Mischief Pet
  2. Enchanted Fey Dragon Mount
  3. Fey Dragon Plushie
  4. Blue Dragon Whelp
  5. Cute but Deadly Tyrande Tank Top

DVDs

  1. X-Men Apocalypse
  2. Star Wars Rebels Season 2
  3. Suicide Squad
  4. Batman Vs. Superman

My Goals for December

Monthly Goals December 2016

Novembers goals really helped me keep myself on a better schedule so I’m hoping this will do the same for December too!

Commenting

I managed to squeeze some comments in this month and I need to keep it up now that my blog scheduling is under control again.

Dissertation Prep

January marks the official  start of my dissertation after having the last four months off to rest and heal. I want to get my feet wet again and get some background research done before January comes around.

World of Warcraft

  • Finish my Druid class campaign.
  • Start levelling my Mage.
  • Finish Suramar quests on my Demon Hunter.
  • Get my Shadow and Holy artifacts on my priest (been delaying it as I need to record them).
  • Work on the two toy achievements: Hot Swapper and The Shortest Distance

Desk: Operation Make Up Storage

The next step of my desk set up is to move my make up from the bathroom and into my new desk. I’m still trying to decide whether it’s better to do that before Christmas, or afterwards. I’ve also got to work out how/where everything is going to go!

Product Reviews

Christmas means new stuff to review, so I want to play catch up and try to squeeze two in this month.

Make Up & Nail Art Tests

We’re going out for Christmas dinner so it’s the perfect excuse to dress up and go all out with make up and nail art. I want to test some new products I got for my birthday and try out some new nail art ideas. I’ll be posting them up on instagram and hopefully get some tutorials and blog posts out of it too!

January Reading Bingo

I first saw this over at Natalie’s Blog and as I told her, I need to do this! I have so much I want to read, especially indie/self published free books I’ve picked up and I have no idea where to start. So I want to create a bingo card, a chart of themes and keywords for picking from my collection books for January.

Any suggestions for what I could have on it? Let me know in the comments?

How is your December shaping up? Do you take it easier because of the holidays or is your schedule even more hectic?
