5 Fandom Guilty Pleasures [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Guilty pleasures

This was a really difficult post for me because I don’t really have any guilty pleasures. I don’t feel guilty about what I enjoy any more. Maybe it comes with age, because when I was younger I was very concerned about what people thought and now I’m just like.. pft, not your business :p

So how did I manage to come up with this list? I thought of more complex reasons for why I might feel guilty about these, or elements of them.

anitaAnita Blake series

This is one of my favourite book series, so why is it even on this list? There have been a huge amount of rants from fans regarding the way these books changed, however, that isn’t what put them on this list. It’s the fact that there’s a a 5 book section of the series which I still don’t even know what happened. Everything else I remember, but from Blood Noir to Hit List things got a bit mixed up, a massive amount of new characters came in and frankly it was just a bit of a mess. Thankfully with the next two books, Affliction and Dead Ice, things have gotten back on track. But that messy section makes this a bit of a guilty pleasure because while I love the author’s work, I can’t for the life of me say that period of her writing is something I’m proud to be a fan of.

twilightTwilight series

Yes, I have not only read this series but also enjoyed it. I was a big fan of it several years ago, and while my enthusiasm has diminished over time, I still don’t hate these books. I actually thought many parts of the books mythos was ingenious, including the sparkly vampires. Sure, it’s totally NOT what vampires are supposed to be – but being a writer is about exploring new ideas, making them your own and daring to go there. Take away the notion of vampires sparkling, the idea of vampires being unable to go out in bright sunshine because it makes their skin change into something obviously supernatural is pretty damn clever. People freaked out over the idea that vampires could go out in the daylight, but for those of us who had been reading vampire fiction for decades this was nothing new. It had been done before. I also appreciated a protagonist who was actually clumsy, and realistically so – I’m very clumsy and I have to say Meyer’s accounts of Bella’s clumsiness were on point as was Kristin Stewart’s acting in the movie. I remember in the first movie she gets tangled in her backpack when trying to take it off and I have done that exact thing so many times.

However, all that being said the series has some massive flaws. Namely, her writing is not the best ever and there are some major issues with the character of Bella and her relationship, especially Edward and his obsessiveness. Those are what make this a guilty pleasure for me.

Mortal Kombat TV & Movie

I absolutely love the Mortal Kombat movies and the TV series, Mortal Kombat: Conquest. However, I do have to admit that they are cheesy and aren’t the best movies ever. Yet they still fascinate me and I can watch them over and over again.

famous5Enid Blyton Books

I love Enid Blyton’s books. When I was younger I gobbled up her Famous Five series, Secret Seven and Adventure series. I also watched the TV series (the one featuring the actors in the image above). However, now as an adult and especially after studying them in English Literature last year I have to admit there are some massive issues with the books. Blyton wrote with the stereotypes of her time, and while on a moral stance I completely disagree with many aspects of her books, I can’t help but love them still.

nwNight World series

The Night World series by L. J Smith and many of her other books remain some of my favourite books. While I love the stories, mythos and characters, I do have to admit that her writing is very poor. When the Vampire Diaries came out as a TV show several years ago I decided to re-read the books and I couldn’t even finish the first one, it was just so awful.

5 Geeky Tattoos I Want [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Geeky tattoos

When I first started this prompt I thought I’d have to change to prompt slightly, and then I began to realise that there were no examples of tattoos out there that summed up what I would ever get. So I ended up doing the prompt properly 😀 As a Libra I love art, but I’m also very picky. On top of that I’m very ticklish and one of my conditions means my skin does odd things. So these are more of a theoretical list of geeky tattoos that I would get.

  marquePhedre’s Marque

Kushiel Legacy by Jacqueline Carey

If you’ve been reading my blog you’ve seen me mention this series a bazillion times now. The marque is a beautiful back tattoo that is completed in stages and while it represents freedom and other things in the fandom, to me personally it represents something deeply personal. A lot of people have found themselves changed and moved by the series and there is a whole page of the author’s website dedicated to fan tattoos based on Phedre’s marque. I would need to have something specifically designed, something to incorporate the different elements of my personality and spirituality if I ever decided to take the plunge. I doubt I could handle a large version, but a smaller one somewhere less ticklish might happen one day.

yubyub“Yub, Yub, Commander”

Star Wars Quote

I’m a massive Star Wars geek, so for me a Star Wars tattoo would have to be suitably geeky and something other fans would recognise. For me this would be the quote ‘Yub, yub, Commander’ from the Star Wars EU (now Legends) X-Wing series. It’s an ongoing joke through the series involving the idea of an ewok pilot;

His name is Kettch, and he’s an Ewok.
Oh, yes. Determined to fight. You should hear him say, ‘Yub, yub.’ He makes it a battle cry.
Wes, assuming he could be educated up to Alliance fighter-pilot standards, an Ewok couldn’t even reach an X-wing’s controls.
He wears arm and leg extensions, prosthetics built for him by a sympathetic medical droid. And he’s anxious to go, Commander.
Please tell me you’re kidding.
Of course I’m kidding. Pilot-candidate number one is a Human female from Tatooine, Falynn Sandskimmer.
I’m going to get you, Janson.
Yub, yub, Commander.
―Wes Janson and Wedge Antilles

You can read more about Kettch, his exploits and the pranks involving him here. If you’ve not had a chance to read these novels; do! They may not be canon any more but they are hilarious.

buffy“The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.”

Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I’ve talked about how much Buffy means to me and how much it got me through in my teen years and early 20s. There were so many lessons from that show that have stuck with me, but this one in particular rang true. My life is hard, I’m not gloating or looking for sympathy, it’s a simple fact. This quote is a reminder to me that it will be hard, it is hard for everyone, and I am not alone. There is light in the darkness.

hippogryph.v6511moonkin_hatchling_a.v6052Hippograph Hatchling & Moonkin Hatchling

World of Warcraft

I love World of Warcraft and the lore of the universe, so naturally I’d have to have a tattoo from the game. I’m a pet battle addict and these are my two favourite pets (appearance wise, don’t ask me for my favourite battle pet!).

“When in doubt, shoot the wizard.”

Advice from Numair to Kel in Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce

This is my literary geeky submission to this list. I love this quote from Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce, and like the Star Wars one it is something that only fans of the books would recognise.

Womances Redux [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - Womances Redux

5fandomfridaySo, it turns out that I screwed up this Fandom 5 and as this weeks is a make-up one (aka do one you missed previously) I decided to redo this one. I didn’t realise womance was the equivalent of bromance and therefore pertained to friendship not actual romance. So here are my top 5 female friendships.

jaimeeveJaime: “It keeps me toned.”

Eve: “So does kickboxing. And it’s a damned sight more practical too. Some guy jumps you in an alley, what are you going to do? Assume the lotus position?”

I absolutely love this series of novels by Kelley Armstrong, but the one womance that stands out is Eve and Jaime. I don’t want to give any spoilers, so all I’m going to say is that these two are forced together through a set of circumstances and aren’t anything alike. There’s no way they’d have become friends otherwise. But their friendship? It is so strong and it is hilarious at so many points.

Tamsin: What’s so great about Kenzi, anyway?
Bo: She’s, uh… She’s Kenzi. She’s smart and honest and kind. And she makes me feel normal. And special- all at the same time.
Tamsin: Oh.
Bo: She is my heart, Tamsin.

Kenzi is with Bo from the start of the show, throughout the whole omg-I’m-not-human-I-can-kill-people-with-a-kiss revelation. They’d only just met and Kenzi could have quite easily ran a mile. Instead they formed a bond, a true friendship that transcended the human-fae boundary. Most of the fae considered Kenzi to be Bo’s pet, something that annoyed both of them, but Kenzi continued to excel in her sidekick duties and went beyond the call of duty (I’ve yet to watch Season 5, so no spoilers please!). The best thing about their friendship is how down to earth and utterly ridiculously hilarious it is at times. They banter, they mock one another, they gossip and share the same thoughts – just like real best friends do.

Willow: The other night, y’know being captured and all, facing off with Faith… Things just – kinda got clear. I mean, you’ve been fighting evil here for three years and I’ve helped some. And now we’re supposed to decide what we want to do with our lives. And I just realized that’s what I want to do. Fight evil, help people. I mean, I-I think it’s worth doing. And I don’t think you do it because you have to. It’s a good fight, Buffy, and I want in.

Picking a quote for this one was super hard (and made me want to watch Buffy for the millionth time!) but I chose this one in the end because super smart Willow chose to stay in Sunnydale and help her best friend fight. Knowing that Buffy, as a slayer, would be fighting until the day she died, not to mention that slayers have a very short life span. There are people out there that would have fun a mile at the prospect of their friend dying, or them dying as a result of being involved in the life of a slayer. Not Willow, instead she signs up for full time scooby gang membership. In the show Buffy’s long reign as a slayer is attributed to her having friends and family to support her. Willow is a big part of that, and it’s one of the things that makes Willow’s turn to the dark side even more tragic for me; she knows Buffy will fight her because that is what she does, she makes the hard decisions. But her agony over Tara’s death is just too much to bear, too much for anyone to bear, including her best friends. Willow is just one aspect of the scooby gang, but she’s Buffy’s closest female friend and when they head off to college you especially notice just how important having that girl pal is for young women as they grow into adulthood.

These guys are strong, been through hell several times, saved the world more times than you can count and are still goofy with one another. I learned so much from this show and so many Buffy/Willow quotes live with me as I go through life, none more so than Willow’s “love makes you do the whacky” – which honestly, I think every young woman needs to be told by their best friend at least once.

Chloe Sullivan: Look, and Lois even made her world famous rum cake for you.
Lois Lane: From scratch.
Clark Kent: (looks at the slanted cake) Oh. I never would’ve guessed.
Chloe Sullivan: You should’ve seen the first two.

It has been a while since I watched Smallville but straight away these two cousins popped up. They had to go on this list. However, it has been so long and with 10 seasons of it, finding a quote took me ages. There’s probably better ones out there but I ran out of time to find one. Anyway, to this day Smallville’s Lois Lane is my favourite version, and her relationship with Chloe is so great. They’re more like sisters than cousins and that means they’re not afraid to tell the other one when they’re being an idiot. They know each other inside out and have an incredibly strong bond.

Nell: I analyzed him the best that I could, but… yeah, I was wrong.
Hetty: Well, Intelligence only takes us so far.
Nell: Why is that?
Hetty: We’re human. We’re too mercurial to ever really be known.
Nell: Hm. Hettie, as an intelligence analyst, not exactly encouraging.
Hetty: Well, I’m not suggesting that it is. It’s a reminder. Our work is never done.

If you’ve never watched NCIS: Los Angeles then the first thing I need to tell you is Hetty is described by one of the other characters as probably being “the master of the universe”. She has her fingers in every pie, even the ones no one knows exists and nothing gets past her. She frequently takes people under her wing, and Nell is no exception. But unlike the other characters, such as Callen and Kensi, Nell is shaping up as Hetty’s protege and at times it is scary how much they think alike. Nell has a relationship with Hetty unlike anyone else and she has her respect despite being so much younger and less experienced.

Honorable Mentions

Bones – Angela/Brennan

Castle – Kate/Lanie

Crossing Jordan – Jordan/Lily

World of Warcraft – Tyrande/Shandris

5 Things in My Purse at All Times [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - In my bag

Lipbalm & Lipgloss

I hate dry lips and so I always keep some lipbalm and lipgloss in my bag. I love nivea’s lip care range and use several different ones regularly. The current lipglosses I’m using are from Collection 2000.

IMG_1626I love having a notebook with me so I can write down anything I need to know, or remember. To do lists keep me sane and stop me from over stressing, and I keep a diary for noting down date specific. Notebooks are also great to have handy if you’re a writer or student; ideas for writing or assignments can come at any time and I often write things down at random times.

I should probably write an entry about coping/making life easier with chronic illnesses and pain. Keeping a book or my kindle in my bag at all times is just one way that I keep my mind off the pain. If I’m struggling on a journey or have to wait for a while I can get lost in a book and relax.

IMG_1627I drink a LOT of water, and I always have water with me. It helps keep me hydrated (duh…), means I can take my medication when I need and helps if I get overexerted. I always have a drink nearby wherever I am.

IMG_1625Like my book/kindle, my phone is an excellent way for me to keep my mind off a crappy day. As I suffer from IBS I often use my phone to help keep me calm, and keep me busy so I don’t skin pick. I play games, or just check out twitter or facebook. I usually have headphones handy as well so if I’m in a situation that’s really noisy, such as a train ride or at uni when I’m trying to work, I can block it out. Also, I keep a phone on me for safety reasons. As a disabled girl with mobility issues it is too much of a risk not to have some way to get help if I fall and hurt myself.

5 OTP’s I Ship [5 Fandom Friday]

5 Fandom Friday - OTPs

OTP stands for One True Pairing; your favourite pairing in a fandom. Or in my case, one of many. I often ship more than one couple in a fandom, and even more than one partner for a character. I’ve got a full list of my ‘ships over at my website but here are my top five. You should also totally check out the wonderful OTP clique Dearest to show your love for your OTP.

Luke Skywalker & Mara Jade

Star Wars Expanded Universe

Luke: “Patience is a virtue.”

Mara: “Never had much use for it myself.”

Luke: “Yes, I’ve noticed.”

Luke: “Is there something you want to tell me?

Mara: “If I wanted to tell you, I would, wouldn’t I?

Luke: “Not if you thought it might upset me.

Mara: “You’ve got me. I hate that shirt. In fact, I think you’re a crummy dresser, period.

Luke: “You bought me this shirt.

Even though it is no longer canon, this is and will always be my top OTP. Honestly I could probably do a whole post on my OTPs from the Star Wars universe. For most of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) Luke wandered around having a few relationships here and there until Timothy Zahn created Mara Jade, the Emperor’s Hand. Ok, fair enough their relationship didn’t start off great – she tried to kill him to avenge her Master’s death – but there was that spark. You know, that one which grabs your attention and continues to keep you hooked. They are two people who fit together, and the witty dialogue between them is fantastic. For example, when pregnant Mara’s reaction was to tell Luke; Darling. I love you, you are my life and my light. If you ever do this to me again I will vape you where you stand. They’ll never give up on one another or their loved one, and they kick ass while they do it.

Alanna the Lioness & George Cooper

Tortall novels by Tamora Pierce

“There’s plenty more fish in the sea than Prince Jonathan,” he told her softly. “And this particular fish loves you with all his crooked heart.”
– George to Alanna

The lady knight should fall in love with the prince she grew up with. Right? Nope, not this one. The first lady knight in hundreds of years (or ever, it’s been a while since I read these books), and she finds her soulmate in the king of thieves. As much as I liked Jon as a character he just wasn’t suited for Alanna, and George was the rougish rake who loved her for who she was.

robinmarianMarian and Robin Hood

Maid Marian: You came for me… you’re alive…
Robin of Locksley: I would die for you.

I ship Marian and Robin in pretty much every incarnation, with Once Upon a Time being the only exception (Regina/Robin!). It is my favourite fairytale and I’m not even sure how to put into words how much they mean to me. I chose the quote from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves because that epitomises their relationship for me. It is the forever ever after love, the love so strong that you would do anything for that person, even die for them.

phedre_and_joscelin_by_jankolas-d4lnhn3[Artwork by Jankolas]

Kushiel Legacy by Jacqueline Carey

“Phédre, I’m used to it…your wandering around with the Name of God in your head is just one more damned thing to get used to.!

“Am I that hard to live with?” I asked.

“Yes.” His arms tightened around me. “But it’s worth it.”

Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel legacy means a lot to me in many ways, and so it was natural for this pair to make this list. Phédre is a courtesan, a daughter of Naamah, and Joscelin is her guard and a member of the Cassiline Brotherhood. To understand their relationship you need to understand exactly what a Cassiline is; it is a guardian sworn to protect their charge, every part of their fighting style is designed to protect their ward and they only drawn their sword to kill. They are dedicated to the point that they train in a move called the Terminus, an act in which a Cassiline throws their dagger to kill their ward and then uses their other dagger to slit their own throat. It may sound morbid, but the point is that even in death they have saved their ward from harm.

Joscelin goes through literal hell to find and save Phédre at one point. As a member of the brotherhood he swore a vow of chastity, one which he eventually breaks after falling in love with Phédre. Despite all the pain, suffering and degradation he has to suffer, he goes through it all to save his love. He is utterly devoted to her, accepts her for who she is and what she does. I honestly cannot think of a love that is as pure and as strong as these two. Even in the darkest moments their devotion wins through.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels by Rick Riordan

“It’s okay,” he said. “We’re together.” He didn’t say you’re okay, or we’re alive. After all they’d been through over the last year, he knew that the most important thing was that they were together. She loved him for saying that.

Annabeth put her knee on Percy’s chest. She pushed her forearm against his throat. She didn’t care what the Romans thought. A white-hot lump of anger expanded in her chest—a tumor of worry and bitterness that she’d been carrying around since last autumn.
“If you ever leave me again,” she said, her eyes stinging, “I swear to all the gods—”
Percy had the nerve to laugh. Suddenly the lump of heated emotions melted inside Annabeth.
“Consider me warned,” Percy said. “I missed you, too.”

The newest addition to this list, and they make it because of the huge amount of difficulties they have faced. I don’t want to give away spoilers, so lets just put it this way; they’ve been to hell and back, and had everything including a godly kitchen sink thrown at them. They have been at deaths door, they have almost seen the world end and they still stick together. He’s her seaweed brain and she’s his wise girl, and they are just super cute together. I think what makes me love this couple so much is that when Percy’s being an idiot, Annabeth is the first person to call him on it and slap him for it.

Honourable mentions

Narrowing it down to just 5 was tough and the final two especially had to fight with a few others. Buffy/Angel was probably one of my first OTPs but didn’t make the cut because I’m not sure that I could argue for it any more. I love their relationship, but could I say it was my OTP or that I believed they belonged together? Possibly not. Then there’s the World of Warcraft universe; I have several OTPs from this fandom and I wanted desperately to feature one – but I couldn’t choose one over the others! I couldn’t decide between Jaina/Kalecgos, Alexstraza/Krasus, Rhonin/Vereesa or Alleria/Turaylon!
