How to Style Emerald May’s Birthstone!

Birthstone Series: Emerald, May's Birthstone

After the less than inspiring transparency of diamonds last month I was looking forward to the vibrant and lush shades of green that make up May’s birthstone Emerald! Emerald can range from a bright green to a forest green, and even slightly darker. As we’ve got Peridot coming up in a few months (August) I had to be super careful not to overlap so I’ve stuck to deep greens of a cooler shade, forest greens and very few khaki greens. The pinterest board features items and colour palettes that cover all these shades, as well as gold, peach, navy and purple.

The Birthstone series will be exploring the world of birth stones and creating a pinterest mood board filled with style ideas related to that month’s birthstone and related colours. There will be women’s fashion, jewellery, make up, accessories, colour palettes and some home decor items thrown in too. This series will be posted on the third Saturday of every month.

I’ll be adding a few more things to the board from time to time so don’t forget to follow it. Pin Birthstone Series: Emerald (May)

How to style April’s birthstone Diamond!

Birthstones - Diamond (April)

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right? For some people yes, for others diamonds just aren’t that exciting. Add in the fact that they are super expensive, and the dupe diamantés can sometimes look too fake, and styling for April’s birthstone Diamond is no easy task. As a transparent gemstone selecting colours was tricky, and I didn’t want to end  up with a board full of greys and white. So for this colour scheme I took some inspiration from the rarer pink diamonds (did you know diamonds actually come in a wide range of colours?) and created a palette of white, silver, greys, hushed pink and nude tones.

X-Men Casual Cosplay for Storm & Mystique

Each week I’m going to be grabbing a random prompt from linkups and challenges and taking part. To make it a bit more fun I’m asking you guys to help me decide and you can vote on facebook or twitter for your favourite choice of four options. This week we had a tie between Angsty Romances and Casual Cosplay, and I decided to give Casual Cosplay a go! I’ve never done this before so I may mess it up or do it a bit differently! You can read all about Casual Cosplay over at Nerdily! Here are this years prompts!

Casual Cosplay themes 2017

I decided to do two characters for this because it was a fun exercise and I couldn’t actually decide between the two 😛 So I picked two characters from X-Men; Storm and Mystique. While I’ve not read many of the comics, I became a fan from watching the animated series in the 90s. I chose Storm because she’s awesome and one of my favourite characters, and Mystique was chosen more for aesthetics. I liked the challenge of trying to match her outfit and throw in some colour to represent her vibrant skin tone.

Storm

Casual Cosplay: X-Men Storm

You can view the full set with links to every item over on Polyvore.

For Storm I went with black jeans rather than leather for a more casual, comfortable feel although opted to throw in a leather jacket and boots to add some in. I included two different tops, one with a metallic neckline that copies Storm’s outfit and the other with a touch of metal in the form of loops on each strap.  I couldn’t find one with a gold neckline because unless sequins are your thing there aren’t many options.

To jazz it up and go with Storm’s weather powers I’ve added in a gold belt to break up the black, as well as a pair of lightning bolt earrings to mimic the ones Storm’s often seen wearing. Eye makeup is a smokey sliver eye and nails feature more lightning bolts.

Here’s the run down of items included:

  1. Black Jeans – George at Asda.
  2. Eyelet Vest – George at Asda.
  3. Embroidered Scoop Neck Vest – George at Asda.
  4. Only File Faux Leather Jacket – Freemans
  5. Lilley Womens Riding Boots – Shoezone
  6. Zig Zag Lightning Bolt Earrings – Etsy
  7. Gold Chain Jeans Belt – New Look
  8. Lightning Bolt Nails – All for nails
  9. Eye make up – Girls Beauty Look

Mystique

Casual Cosplay: X-Men Mystique

You can view the full set with links to every item over on Polyvore.

For Mystique I started with a casual of her dress and went from there. Finding a skull belt isn’t easy unless you make your own, so I offered two options; a metallic link belt or a grungy skull belt. As this is a casual cosplay I went with low heel boots rather than high heels to accompany the maxi dress. The outfit itself is quite plain, so to throw in a bit of colour and to reflect Mystique’s gorgeous skin colour I found some gloves with pale blue lace, and a decorative skull head bow.

Nail art and Makeup features some more skulls and the blue-hue of Mystique’s natural skin tone to spice the white outfit up.

Here’s the run down of items included:

  1. Poppy Basic Halterneck Maxi Dress – Boohoo.
  2. Black Belt With Large Rhinestone Skull and Cross Bones – Luxury Divas
  3. Chain Belt – Freemans
  4. City Walk Faux Leather Boots – Freemans
  5. Black and White Striped Skull Hair Bow – Etsy
  6. Rockin Claws from House of Wonderland Nails – The Nailasaurus
  7. Blue and silver eye makeup – Carolinebeautyinc

So, how did I do? Let me know in the comments!

Geek on the High Street [Geek on the High Street]

Sharing Saturday: Geek on the High Street

It’s that time again! The aim of Geek on the High Street is to find and highlight geeky products that can be found in normal high street stores. Unfortunately a lot of women’s clothes stores and department stores like Debenhams & M&S consider geeky stuff to be for men or children. So Geek on the High Street was born to shine a light on some of the hidden geeky treasures for geek girls. I’ll be mainly focusing on women’s fashion since mostly women read my blog, but if anyone is interested in a male version please let me know in the comments! You can check out round 1 here and round 2 here 🙂

Like last time you can find a few of my favourites featured in this post while the pinterest board has everything! 🙂

Dorothy Perkins

Not much over at Dorothy Perkins as usual, however, there were a few cute and quirky items such as these racoon slippers, retro top and unicorn socks.

George at Asda

This time around George at Asda was quite a let down. A few socks, a Minnie and Mickey top and a few unicorn themed items were the highlights.

Evans

First timers on Geek on the High Street, Evans don’t have much in the way of geeky but I did manage to spot these quirky tops and some fab items in their nightwear section. Namely some awesome animal pyjama and night mask sets and animal themed dressing gowns.

H & M

H & M have an eclectic selection right now, including some DC underwear, this fabulous dragon onesie and some Disney and Star wars goodies.

New Look

Sorry unicorn fans, it seems that New Look has ditched their fascination with unicorns. Instead there’s some grungy gothic items and some cutie pie socks to satisfy your geeky needs!

Next

Next had a surprising amount of bits that caught my eye, including items from Disney, some rock band tees, these snazzy Star Wars PJs and just look at those awesome swan slippers!

Matalan

Another newcomer, Matalan seems to keep their geeky and quirky items for places that can’t be seen in public. Namely, sleeping, shoes and socks. If you’re partial to quirky socks then this is a place for you to check out.

River Island

River Island is mainly focused on dark, rock and grunge items, although there’s a few quirky items such as this science planet t-shirt that I spotted.

Select

First time here for Select, and and as you can see they don’t really cater much to the alternative and geeky crowd. I did find these two items though, and loving the #witchplease top.

Sports Direct

Sports Direct are once again the winner in all round awesomeness for alternative, quirky and geeky items with a tonne of well known fandoms and names covered. Like always you can view all the items I found on the Geek on the High Street pinterest board, but here are a few I had to share with you!

Sports Direct – Dresses

Wait.. Sports Direct have a new shop? ‘Fraid not folks. There were just that many absolutely awesome geeky dresses and skirts that I had to give them their own section, and even then this was me ‘narrowing it down to a select few’. Yep, you need to check them out on the pinterest board pronto!

TK Maxx

Ok, I may just be a little bit obsessed with the TK Maxx cat hoodie and t-shirt featured above. There’s not really any fandoms over there and the only geeky brands are band related. There’s some fun quirky and fantasy stuff though, like the dinosaur top and the wolf eyes t-shirt.

Topshop

Topshop’s geeky game is a bit all over the place this time around to be honest. There’s not really any fandoms, other than the Disney PJs seen here. However, if you’re looking for weird, whimsical, whacky and quirky then Topshop has you covered. As you can see from the selection here there’s some science stuff, zodiac, a few unicorns, some nifty slogans and those damn awesome snake jeans.

Uniqlo

Sadly Uniqlo’s collaboration with Disney is over, as is their Star Wars one that featured in December (although, to be fair you didn’t miss much as most of it catered to men or unisex). There’s still some Minnie and Mickey items about, as well as a bunch of Peanuts stuff and some awesome Marvel comic t-shirts too.

Have you spotted some geeky items around your local high street? Anything I’ve missed? Let me know, and don’t forget to follow the Pinterest board for future updates!
