10 Geeky Things I’m Thankful For

10 Geeky Things That I'm Thankful For!

I was completely stumped on what to do for this month’s 10 things. I have some ideas I’m working on for future 10 things, but wanted to reach out and see what you guys, my readers, wanted to know about me. I popped an open request up on my facebook page and got some great suggestions including this one from Alicia of EightBitBlonde to do a geeky post that ties in with Thanksgiving. As a Brit I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, however, I have a lot of US readers so in the spirit of celebrating Thanksgiving this months 10 Things is dedicated to 10 Geeky thinks that I’m Thankful for.

I previously wrote about 5 fandoms I’m thankful for in a 5 Fandom Friday prompt so this time I’m doing things a little bit differently. I’m going to talk about 10 geeky things in a more abstract way – keep reading to find out what I mean!

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - World Building

World Building

One of the greatest things that everything geeky has given to me is world building. As a young girl I started with stories created from my imagination, stories fuelled from worlds and characters I read in books. As a teenager  exploring the internet for the first time I stumbled upon the world of role playing and from there my interest in world building grew even further. Every tv show, movie, book and video game is set in it’s own universe that has been created by people. A world built from imagination and the possibilities are endless and it’s given us films like Star Wars, to the cheese-fests like Sharknado. There’s so many elements to it too and I started off with this one because I touch on more of them in other sections of this post.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Escapism

Escapism

[bctt tweet=” I could lose myself in the endless words and worlds of books, and it helped me to stay strong, to work through what was happening in the real world. ” username=”justgeekingby”]

The geek world isn’t just about escapism to me, I want to make that clear first, but it certainly is part of it’s charm. Growing up I was bullied a lot and the geeky world gave me a way to escape my tormentors, as well as helping me find myself. I could lose myself in the endless words and worlds of books, and it helped me to stay strong, to work through what was happening in the real world. As I got older and new problems replaced the bullying my geeky interests and pursuits continued to be there for me to offer solace when I needed to relax and remind myself that my every day life isn’t just filled with pain.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Identity & Belonging

Identity & Belonging

A little while ago Hannah of A London Geek wrote about being a Fangirl and not being ashamed, it’s a great post that you should all check out and Hannah really hits the nail on the head with what it feels like to be embrace your geek community. I don’t remember when exactly I realised I was a geek; I was always different, I never fit in and I was instinctively attracted to geeky things. As I got older I embraced the term geek (or nerd, personally I’ve always preferred the term geek for some reason although I accept either!) and it was an important part of piecing together my own identity. I suddenly wasn’t just a weirdo, the odd one out, I was a part of a group of people who saw the world differently and shared my passions.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - The Games That Define Us Blog Collaboration

A few days ago my post as a part of The Games that Define Us collaboration went live and in it I talk about how I became a gamer. It was a very cathartic post, and until I put my story down on paper I hadn’t even realised just how much that one game had effected my life, and that is just one element of my geeky world. Every part of my geeky interests and pursuits from this blog, to the games I play and the books I adore are what make me who I am.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Friendly Communities

Friendly Communities

The geek community isn’t all sunshine and rainbows – just ask any geeky woman – which is why this section is specifically called ‘friendly’ communities. I have been in many communities over the years that have I thought were friendly and I later realised in hindsight were toxic, however, I’m not going to dwell on those as this is about what I’m thankful for and not losing myself in the past. I make a point of mentioning them because I think it’s important to recognise the toxicity that does exist in the geek community rather than pushing it under the carpet – and in doing so it makes me even more grateful for the friendly communities I have now found and the friendships that have grown from them.

You may have heard or even used the term ‘geeking out’ before, and for me being a geek is a community thing. While I can entertain myself with my own thoughts and theories about a plot or character, at the end of the day I get the most joy from being able to talk about it with someone. My relationship with my fiancé Chris is filled with geeky moments. We are a couple that games and geeks out together, and I love that. I love that we have a room in our house dedicated to geeky things and that we agreed to decorate in a geeky way. I love seeing a tweet on twitter from a friend as they discover my favourite book or show for the first time, and their excitement as they enter that new world of wonder and magic. And I love the endless creativity and adventures of my fellow geek bloggers.

Being a geek is 100 times more fun with friends.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Collectables

Collectables

I’ve always been a collector; keyrings, badges, postcards. I still have them from when I was a kid.  The internet has brought many wonders including online shopping and that’s just made it even easier to access geeky items, especially now there’s subscription boxes like Lootcrate and Geek Box. There are now so many things to collect and sites like etsy and redbubble, just to name a few, mean that we can also buy things created by other fans. Art and items created with the love, joy and attention to detail that comes from someone who feels the same way you do about a fandom. It doesn’t matter how old or obscure a fandom is there is something out there for everyone or there will be. Just the other day one of my favourite authors, Tamora Pierce, announced the first official line of merchandise for her books despite her writing for decades.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Geeky Fashion

Geeky Fashion

You may have noticed that I love geeky fashion 😉 I’ve never been a big fashion person, style has never been top of my list and I tend to rock my own unique style that is a hybrid of geeky, boho, rock and a bit of goth thrown in. I’m very much a jeans and t-shirt girl so I love accessories to add some flare to my outfits. So it’s always been really important to me to have geeky fashion items that help me show my identify, my style to the world. I rarely like or care for the current trends – I’m the type of girl who walks into a woman’s fashion store, takes a look around at the ghastly ‘in season’ colours and walks right back out the door. However, I am a Libra and that means I do like to look good. Growing up in the 90s and 00s there wasn’t much geeky fashion at all; you could order from Hot Topic in the US but the prices were high and you had to deal with shipping prices. That was  all we had back then. So what I am incredibly grateful for now is the wider range of online stores catering to women’s geeky fashion.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Spin Offs

Spin Offs

Oh no, she said the evil ‘spin off’ term! Don’t panic; hear me out. Spin offs, adaptations, accompanying material, whatever you want to call it. I’m not just talking about TV shows that spin off from an original show or books being adapted into movies; I’m also referring to book and comics that are written in the same universe as a movie or a game. My favourite and most beloved example being the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now referred to as Legends since the Disney canon reboot). I am the sort of fan that literally gobbles everything I can get my hands on. I don’t care if the movie is dodgy, or if the book is badly written. If there is one then I want to see it/read it. I still watch/read stand-alone movies and books but things that are part of a series and a much wider universe are so much more special to me. I think that is what appeals to me about the Star Wars EU, the Warcraft Universe and DC Comics Universe; there are so many characters and stories to be told. It’s why I was sad to see the Star Wars reboot happen, and also excited for the new canon because to me it’s just more stories that get to be told.

[bctt tweet=”I am the sort of fan that literally gobbles everything I can get my hands on. I don’t care if it’s dodgy, or badly written. If there is something then I want to see it/read it.” username=”justgeekingby”]

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Fansites

Fansites

As I touched upon in world building every universe of a fandom has so many aspects and this has led to the creation of various virtual fan creations since the creation of the internet. Everyone has their favourite ways of consuming this content and one of those ways for me is fansites. There are so many different formats that a fan can show their love for a subject; news site, guides, shrines, cliques, fanlistings, website listing, online rpg, and more. I’ve been involved or ran my own versions of several of those over the years and I know the joy that it brings to be a part of that larger community online. I also love seeing the way in which people express themselves and their love for the subject and/or the community through their site.

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Fanart

Fan Art

Fan art is the other big way I consume fan creations online whether it be digital art or traditional, and I am just so grateful that there are so many talented individuals out there that take the time to create such gorgeous work and share it with the world. I know there are some artists who have been treated badly and no longer share their work, and that breaks my heart but I can understand why they feel that way. I’ve always felt a special connection to art, always been drawn to it and to see someone capture the emotions of a character, relationship or scene accurately has always been very moving to me.

[bctt tweet=”I’ve always felt a special connection to art, always been drawn to it and to see someone capture the emotions of a character, relationship or scene accurately has always been very moving to me.” username=”justgeekingby”]

This wonderful piece of art was commissioned by Chris, my fiancé, from our wonderful friend and talented artist Jen Pattison. You can read my interview with Jen right here!

10 Geeky Things I'm Thankful for - Inspiration

Inspiration

The one theme that I think ties all these points together for me is this one; inspiration. It isn’t just from the geeky world, or what it represents, it’s how it inspires me and others to be ourselves and to grow as people. As I was writing this I realised that I was representing just one type of geek; a fandom geek, a fan girl. I’m a bookworm, a Star Wars nerd, a comic book geek. But that’s not the only type of geek out there and that is amazing. The geeky world inspires people to be different, to be who they really are and to reach for the unknown. It can be what inspires them to go into careers in tech or science, to educate and support the next generation, or to share their passions by creating new worlds and universes for people to enjoy and explore.

[bctt tweet=”The geeky world inspires people to be different, to be who they really are & to reach for the unknown. It can be what inspires them to go into careers in tech or science, to educate and support the next generation.” username=”justgeekingby”]

Being a geek is amazing and inspirational, and I am thankful for it teaching me that anything is possible.

Over to You

I hope that this gave you a bit more of an insight into me and what being a geek and the geeky world means to me. What about you? Is there an identity or community that you’re thankful for?

[bctt tweet=”Being a geek is amazing and inspirational, and I am thankful for it teaching me that anything is possible.” username=”justgeekingby”]

Is it the geeky world or something else?

If you’re a fellow geek did anything in this entry strike a chord? Do you have any insights of your own to add?

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Let me know in the comments and if you’re in the US I hope you’re having a wonderful Thanksgiving! Got a suggestion for another 10 Things? Pop it in the comments too 🙂

Guest Posts Wanted!

Guest Posts

As I get back into the swing of things and get September’s posts scheduled I’d like to also get some guests posts happening for September and the next following months, including the run up to Christmas. So I’ve had a little bit of a brainstorm and here are some ideas for content that I’d like to see on the blog but I don’t really have time to implement myself.

About Guest Posting

A guest post is as simple as it sounds; you write a post as a guest for someone else’s blog. You don’t necessarily need to have an active blog of your own so it’s great for someone who wants to give blogging a try, doesn’t have time to maintain a full time blog or is currently on hiatus from their own blog and wants to keep their skills sharp. For active bloggers it’s a fantastic chance to network and help grown your audience as it gives a different audience a sneak peek into your world and leaves a trail of bread crumbs back to your own blog.

Each blogger will have their own requirements for guest blogging so be sure to check those for each blog. Here at Just Geeking By I’m quite lenient; the floor is open to anyone who might be interested. I’m open to ideas, however, keep in mind that your post needs to be something my audience will be interested in. So if you’re a travel blogger, for example, this isn’t the best blog for you. The most important part of this process for me is being open with one another and discussing your idea. I will also need to have the final say on whatever you plan to post.

Ideas List

Here are a few ideas I had. If you have an idea that spins off from any of these then feel free to run it by me! Also, guys please don’t be put off by the girlie banner or the fact that my posts are usually female oriented. I’d love to see some male geek oriented content! I just simply do not have the time and energy to devote to everything.

Do any of those ideas tickle your fancy? Or maybe one of them has got a different idea planted in your head? If so there are two ways to contact me about guest posting here at Just Geeking By. You can do so by commenting on this post or if you prefer to do so privately there is a form here.

I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

Disney Fashion on the High Street!

Being a fan of Disney might not be something that most people consider to be necessarily geeky, however, in my experience being a fan of Disney fashion tends to be quite a geeky trait. I love Disney and would quite happily show off my Disney pride in any way I can. Unlike other franchises, Disney is pretty popular in UK high street stores as it’s consider to be something that most (if not all) women like so there was plenty to choose from. A lot of the time though it was sleepwear or underwear though; a not so subtle suggestion that women don’t want to wear these sorts of things? 😛 You’ll also notice a reoccurring theme or lack of theme, namely what retailers think are the most popular Disney characters so lots of the Mouses and Princes. I did managed to dig out a few other items and they are here in this post, so enjoy!

Check out the rest of the board below for more items!

Primark

Nightdresses

As I said, sleepwear was a common theme and despite the connotation that women only want to be seen in Disney clothes in their bedroom, some of them are downright cute. Primark have finally updated their website (hurray!) to actually show products which means I can bring you these goodies. There’s the beautiful Aladdin Nightdress in a deep burgundy, followed by some pure cattitude from the Aristocats Marie Nightshirt, and finally this fantastic ‘I speak fluent Disney’ nightdress (it’s listed as a pajama top, it looks way too long to be a top to me) which I would LOVE as t-shirt.

Pyjamas

Primark also have some really cute Pyjama sets in right now, and I loved the fact that they had a variety of characters as well! First up are a personal favourite of mine; Chip ‘n’ Dale. I used to love Rescue Rangers when I was a kid so every time I see anything with these guys on I’m super happy.  Next is an awesome set of Aladdin PJs featuring the genie, and then there’s a cute pair set of Thumper Pyjamas.

Socks

We’re finally getting to something you can show off in the day time 😉 Primark have some fabulous Disney socks right now including the ones featured here: Little Mermaid, Mrs Potts & Chip, Stitch and Disney Team.

Miscellaneous

Here are a few more ‘outgoing’ *wink* Disney items I found while exploring the Primark website. They have a nice range of caps, including these two; a Minnie Mouse cap complete with ears and a bow and a plainer Mickey Mouse one. This Mickey Mouse hoodie was one of the few non-sleepwear items I could find. And yes, I am aware that a cushion is not a fashion item – but this Lion King Hakuna Matata cushion is just so awesome! I had to include it and I want one so badly!

Sports Direct

Sports Direct still has some good stuff on offer, including some great Disney swimwear which considering the weather in the UK right now is right on point! Their Disney range includes these two great items which aren’t your usual run of the mill Disney. The Disney Princess swimwear set is dark and gothic, and the Swimming Costume features the often overlooked villains. There aren’t many t-shirts listed and this Disney Princess Rose T-Shirt (also available in pink) and Minnie and Mickey arguing T-Shirt were the only ones available.

Uniqlo

Personally I’m not a big fan of Uniqlo as I find that their women’s t-shirts tend to be terribly unisex, however, they are the only UK high street store that goes out of it’s way to collaborate with geeky franchises. They did so with Disney and you view the whole collaboration here. I’ve chosen a few of my favourite pieces to show you here; Jasmine t-Shirt, The Little Mermaid t-shirt, Minnie and Daisy BFFs t-shirt,   Minnie and the sun t-shirt,   Mickey and the Sun shorts, and Mickey sweat long sleeve dress.

TK Maxx

I found some great T-Shirts over at TK Maxx including these Snow White and Cinderella ones which appear to be part of a series so check out the pinterest board for the others. It was great to see a Tinkerbell and Bambi t-shirt too instead of sleepwear for a change 😉

George at Asda

Last of all I bring you my best finds. George at Asda had some great Disney stuff and here are my favourites. I am absolutely in love with this Beauty and the Beast Squad Goals T-shirt! The colours and design of this Aladdin pyjama set is gorgeous, and then there’s two unique mouse designs; a red Minnie top and an ice cream Mickey t-shirt.

Over to You

I hope you enjoyed this months Geek on the High Street!

Have you seen something you need to add to your wardrobe asap?

Do you think that something’s overdone (princesses, mouses) or do you not mind, you just love Disney in any form?

What characters/movies do you wish designers featured more?

How do you feel about Disney usually being relegated to sleepwear?

Let me know in the comments, I always love to hear from you <3

Do you speak fluent Disney? Get your Disney Geek on with these awesome fashion items availble in UK high street stores! Includng Aladdin, Tinkerbell & more!

Star Wars Fashion on the High Street!

Geek on the High Street - Star Wars Day Edition!

May the 4th be with you! Happy Star Wars day to all my fellow Star Wars geeks! It seemed fitting that the first in the new Geek of the High Street series was dedicated to this day. Sadly though, I don’t have much to bring you. There is a distinct lack of anything Star Wars in most British high street stores directed at women. At best we get a few smatterings as seen in this post and the pinterest board, or unisex items. While menswear and kidswear (again primarily boys) are filled to the brim! Even my go to Sports Direct let me down this time. Maybe I’ve just timed it badly and it’s in between stock changes (I hope!) and not a sign of things to come.

I’m going to highlight a few of my favourite things, and then there is the pinterest board for you to browse at your leisure. The Star Wars board featured below is just one section of the bigger Geek of the High Street board so don’t forget to check out the whole board and follow it for your geeky fix!

Star Wars Icon denim jacket

First up is this gorgeous denim jacket from Gap. The Star Wars™ Icon denim jacket is originally priced at £69.95 but is currently down to £44.99 and is perfect for the coming summer months!

star wars rebel graphic joggers

Another item that caught my eye in Gap’s fab Star Wars Icon series is these quirky jogging bottoms that allow you to show your rebel pride while you work out or relax at home. There’s a matching top and even better? It’s also on sale, down from £44.95 to £21.99!

This Stormstrooper t-shirt has been given a bohemian make-over and would look great under your new denim jacket 😉 Find it in the sale at Sports Direct for £7.50.

star wars Rey force of nature boots

This may look like just an ordinary boot, however, it’s actually part of an awesome collaboration between Clarks and Star Wars. The Rey, women’s Nature Collection comes in three colours; Grey, Black and Sand (featured here). Each comes in a different colours that reflect the character and her outfits, and feature an exclusive Rey heel detail. They’re priced quite high at £95.00, but Clarks has a good reputation so these are worth the investment.

Star Wars BB-8 iPhone 7 Case

I am a sucker for cute Droid Star Wars phone cases (I’m currently rocking an R2-D2 one myself!) and this BB-8 iPhone 7 case  from TK Maxx is super cute and a bargain at £7.99!

Don't forget to check out the pinterest board for more items!

Sunshine Blogger Award

Sunshine Blog Award

When I saw blogger awards and nominations going around I honestly didn’t expect to get nominated for an award, and that was ok; my blog has been slow and I’ve been building things back up due to my health. So not only was I shocked to get nominated once, but then a second time! Thank you so much Megan and Pepi! It really helped perk me up to know people were thinking of me and that they recognised me and my blog for inspiring positivity. While my life isn’t always a bundle of joy, I do try to use this blog to help people by talking about my life and issues I come across.

Since I’ve been nominated twice I’m going to answer both sets of questions!

About the Award

The Sunshine Blogger award is a peer recognition for bloggers that inspire positivity, joy, warmth and any other emotions that you feel when you think about the sun.

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked you.
  • Nominate 10 new blogs to receive the award and write them 10 new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Questions from Megan

  • What game are you currently playing?

I’m playing a few different ones actually. I always have at least one MMO on the go and right now that’s World of Warcraft. Alongside that I’m playing Divinity 2: Original Sin with my fiance Chris, and then on my own I’m jumping around a few other games as part of a mini-blog project.

  • What game you’re most looking forward to?

Naturally, the next WoW expansion Battle for Azeroth comes to mind first. I don’t tend to keep up with many new games due to funds, time and a massive to play list, however, I’ve been looking forward to Final Fantasy XV on the PC. It’s a game series I’ve never played, but been aware of for years and after seeing the movie Kingsglaive I’ve been dying to know what happens next!

  • What is you favorite game of last year?

Divinity 2: Original Sin – while the combat is so slow (it’s turn based) and drives me a bit nuts, the rest of the game is amazing. It is so funny, yet there’s also the drama, suspense and danger too. We’re only on Act 2 and I’m loving it. I mean, a game that gives you the ability to fricking talk to animals and get quests from them?! Hell yes!

  • What would you change about your favorite franchise?

Off the top of my head I can’t think of what I would change in World of Warcraft, but I do know that there’s been a blog post rummaging around in my head for a while which is me basically putting together my ideal MMORPG using parts from all the ones I play. The fact that I always go back to WoW means that it’s more a case of tweaking than actually changing things, because otherwise I wouldn’t be back to it every time. The only major issue I have is the players themselves; toxic men being anti-female gamers, people camping quests instead of helping, or signing up as the wrong spec just to jump a queue.

  • What game has influenced you creatively? Writing, drawing, etc.

World of Warcraft without a doubt. The lore is just amazing, and I love that they keep adapting things every expansion. I know a lot of people are QQing about changes, but they forget that lore is in the hands of the creators and it needs to change every now and then so the game can grow and not become stagnant. I think the latest complaint was Kul Tiran, i.e. human, druids. I’ve also met the CEO, Mike Morhaim, and he is as down to earth and as geeky as he seems; this is a company he and his friends built up from scratch from their love of gaming and their enthusiasm is still there. That in itself is a massive influence to me as a writer and content creator.

  • What games do you have multiple copies of?

Star Wars games such as Knights of the Old Republic I and II because I lost one of the discs and for many years couldn’t play it, and then Steam did a massive Star Wars Bundle in a sale and I got them all again. We also have multiple copies of the older WoW expansions before downloads became available since we have 2 accounts and at one time a third account between us.

  • How do you usually spend a lazy evening?

I am someone who is always on the go, I cannot sit still unless I’m doing something to engage my mind. So a lazy evening to me is curled up watching a movie with my fiance Chris, or reading comics or a book.

  • How many countries have you been to?

Ooh… I actually had to go count this 😀 Thankfully I started tracking this on a pinterest board a while back so it was a bit easier!

15 = England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Tunisia, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Monaco, Vatican City (it’s actually it’s own country).

  • What was your favorite TV show when you were a child?

She-Ra! I still love that show and have read the recent comics. Generally most 80s cartoons are among my favourites.

  • What was the very first game you ever beat?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Questions from Pepi

  • Which of these houses do you belong to and why? Slotherin, Ravenpaw, Hufflepug, or Gryffinboar.

Ravenpaw! I love books, and it generally just fits my entire personality. I was originally a Slotherin but a few years later I resigned up to Pottermore and got sorted into Ravenpaw.

  • What do you think you would find on the Snapechat?

Stuff I’m not interested in? I don’t usually feel old but Snapchat makes me feel like I’ve missed a generation. I just don’t get it at all.

  • What pop singer do you prefer Cat Cobain, David Meowie, or Purrince? Why?

I’m actually not really a fan of any of them. I know, it’s terrible. There’s probably a few of their songs that I know and that’s about it.

  • What character plays Harrison Bored in Star Mars?

I have no idea how I’m supposed to answer this.. Han Solo?

  • Who is your favorite Star Meow character? Catmander William Riker, Doganna Troi, Catmander Data, Catain Jean-Luc Picard, Geordi La Paw, or Lieutenant Woof? Why?

Sorry, I’m not a trekkie! I really enjoyed the new movies, and that’s as far as my knowledge goes. I’m a Star Wars girl <3

  • What coffee best describes your personality?

Mocha, which happens to be my favourite as well – because I’m not just one thing, I’m a mixture and so you get both the sweet chocolate and the bitter coffee side of things with me.

  • What would you do if you faced a giant fly right now?

I would scream my head off. One time when we were having wasp issues, I had the exact dream except with a giant wasp. I woke my ex up because I was screaming my head off 😀

  • And if the giant fly was Jeff Goldblum?

I’m going to get some flack for this one, but sorry, I totally don’t get the Jeff Goldblum appeal!

  • Cthulhu is in love with you. Would you reject his tentacles? (I know, this one is naughty)

That’s between me and Cthulhu 😉

  • Loki tricks you. How?

It would probably be something geeky, like a new book in a series that has ended, something awesome in a video game or being able to star in a Star Wars film. Something that would get me excited and then break my heart when it wasn’t true.

My Questions
